Bali Hai

The island of Bali is a Hindu enclave in the Muslim nation of Indonesia, It is populated by simple, peaceful people who generally are quite artistic and industrious. It is likely the island alluded to in that song "Bali Hai" in the famous Rogers and Hammerstein musical "South Pacific." I have never been to Bali but my daughter spent three months there many years ago and her stories of her time there painted this island as both exotic and mysterious ... albeit quite hot and humid. In fact my daughter said that the standard greeting there was (in Indonesian) "have you bathed yet"? Interestingly, she also indicated that it was a favorite sex stop for Australian female tourists.

Since her time there, Bali has suffered a very serious terrorist attack where 202 people (mostly tourists) were killed ... see: Wikipedia Entry ... as well as other more recent terrorist threats. Now this erstwhile paradise is again threatened ... this rime with a volcano, Mount Agung, which is spewing ash over the island and has closed down the airport ... see: CNN Story.

It seems that paradises, like Bali and beautiful, idyllic St. Barths (which was recently devastated by two hurricanes) somehow attract both natural and man-made disasters ... as though too much of a good thing, like at Eden, is just unacceptable to the gods and man. Nature doesn't just abhor a vacuum, she also doesn't like paradises very much.

Psychological Warfare

Scott Adams of Dilbert fame, I think has it right -- calling terrorists "terrorists" reinforces their self worth since that is what they are trying to evoke -- terror. And also calling them "cowards" just slides off their backs because they deem themselves heroes for Allah ... see: Dilbert Blog.

Scott Adams rather likes Trump's term "losers" since it is true negative reinforcement for such scumbags ... particularly when their caliphate suffers another loss on the battlefield. And Dilbert's drawer also would like Muslim religious poobahs to disabuse their flocks that 72 virgins await them in heaven for their martyrdom. If they thought that killing innocents guaranteed them an eternity in Hell (without any nookie), they might have second thoughts about their diabolical plans.

I agree on both counts ... and believe that more psychological warfare along these lines might save the U.S. many lives and much treasure.

Common Sense

Paul Mirengoff of the Powerline blog makes a good common-sense case for stopping all immigration from certain Muslim countries which seem to breed terrorists once they live in our country for a while. He argues that no amount of pre-immigration vetting is going to root out the bad guys ... see: Powerline Blog. Sayfullo Saipov was the immigrant from Uzbekistan who slipped through the supposed "rigorous two-year" vetting process (according to the lefty pols and media) and went on to slaughter eight and injure eleven with a rental truck in New York City this past Halloween. (Perhaps, if the two-year vetters had noted that his first name translates into "sword of Allah", it might have helped.)

Yes, our bubble-headed left ... who believe that "diversity" and "inclusion" are the panaceas to all our nation's problems ... have allowed ideology to cloud their common sense. When the United States was building the Panama Canal, we realized that mosquitoes, which caused yellow fever and malaria, were a major hinderance to this project. So, we reduced the population of the mosquitoes by eliminating and oiling their breeding grounds.

This is, what we used to call common sense. And common sense dictates that, if we want to reduce terrorism in our country, we should stop all Muslims from immigrating from those countries that seem to spawn such miscreants. Just as all misquitoes don't carry yellow fever or malaria, not all Muslims are potential terrorists. But, not being able to filter out the bad ones, the next best solution would be to un-diversify and un-include those Muslims who might become our killers. It is just that simple ... use that sense which causes us to come in out of the rain.

No, I am not calling Muslims (from these suspected countries) "mosquitoes" (an expected knee-jerk response from the left). I am saying that, unless and until we can find a way to keep such Muslims from turning on us with the sword of Allah, we should not invite them into our homeland in any numbers. Someday, perhaps, after there is a reformation within this "religion of peace," then this stricture can change. But encouraging people who might want to murder or enslave us does not seem too common-sensical.

Misjudgment

The Seattle, Washington "so-called" judge, James Robart, who blocked President Trump's temporary immigration ban from the seven terrorist-packed countries, claimed, as part of his decision making process, that no immigrants had been arrested for terrorism or terrorist-related activities hailing from these countries since 2001. WRONG! There have been at least 76 ... see: Breitbart Article for all the details. And part of the reasoning for this misjudgment on Judge Robart's part was that these terrorist statistics had been jealously guarded by the Obama administration. I wonder why?

This egregious error in the imposition of this judicial stay of Trump's travel-ban executive order should be more than sufficient to overturn it by the Ninth "Circus" Court panel in San Francisco. I'm not holding my breath ...

Virtue Signaling

Image result for saint

In order to keep you, dear readers, up to date on the latest lingo, this blog's lesson today is on "virtue signaling." This term relates to the melodramatic "holier than thou" mulings of the  multitude of protesters of President Trump's temporary immigration ban from seven terrorist-infested countries. Celebrities and politicians are elbowing each other out the way from in front of the nearest microphones to profess their virtue ... how this Trump action is discriminating against the Muslim religion ... which it clearly isn't. It is merely an attempt to tighten up the vetting processes in these dangerous countries to try to reduce the risk of allowing sleeper terrorists into our country.

Hillary Clinton quickly chimed in with, "That's not who we are." Chuck "Tiny Tears" Schumer publicly turned on the waterworks to demonstrate the extent of his virtue. Our acting Attorney General, Sally Yates, threw herself on her sword over this moral travesty by refusing to defend it at the DOJ ... got fired by Trump ... and became the instant hero of the legions of Soros-backed moonbats. Even our ex-president could not wait two weeks before trying to shame his replacement by issuing his own shining virtue signal from a sunny Caribbean beach.

Yes, this executive order was not communicated well or implemented smoothly ... some rookie mistakes ... but it was legal, caused relatively minor dislocation and is supported by the majority of Americans ... those of us who would rather be safe than sorry.

The Rat Test

The New York police are seeking Ahmad Khan Rahami in connection with the weekend bombings in New York City and nearby New Jersey. Now clearly the man is most likely a Muslim and also is surely known by dozens if not hundreds of other Muslims. If, as is professed by our current political leaders, the vast majority of Muslims are peace-loving and loyal Americans ... then we're now presented with an interesting test -- will Rahami's fellow Muslims rat him out ... or will they close ranks around him and become part of this terrorist conspiracy?

Yes, it seems quite probable that Rahami will be apprehended ... but what I will be watching for ... is how he is caught. Stay tuned ...

Imagine ...

... if Russia or China or Iran or whoever managed with whatever means to shut down the Internet for some period of time. The world has become so dependent on this technology that I believe such an event would cause societal extremis. Just imagine:

- The millions if not billions of people being deprived of their latest news fix from the many Internet sites that now substitute for newspapers. Then a robbery in Peoria or a flood in Perth would not seem quite so important ...

- Social media no longer giving millennials and the other young "gens" the latest updates of the going-ons in their electronic tribe. Face to face communication might just reappear ...

- Tweeters and other instant-message purveyors not being able to comment in real-time to the latest political and social outrages. Politics would then become less strident ...

- Bloggers and other opinion writers being constrained to the lethal gauntlet of trying to get their letters to the editor published in their dying local newspaper ...

- The lack of a e-mail capability making snail-mail letters and FAXes the fallback methods of text communications. Postal carrier mail delivery loads would therefore skyrocket ...

- Television news and opinion programming being deprived of the wellspring of news items from around the world ... instead, being forced to report only about local fires, weddings and traffic accidents ...

- Terrorists and [blank] Lives Matter protesters not being able to coordinate the logistics of their sit-ins or suicide bombings. Wouldn't that be a shame? ...

- Stock market trading being required to go through a telephone call to a broker ... trading volumes would decline dramatically ...

- On-line shopping disappearing ... Amazon, Alibaba, etc. would quickly fold and dying shopping malls would suddenly be reborn. UPS and FedEx package volumes would crater ...

- On-line banking, credit card transactions and money transfers vanishing. Cash would reemerge as the primary unit of commerce ...

But now thinking about it, I'm not entirely sure that the world would be that much worse off ...

Why Not Hillary?

Unfortunately Donald Trump is a coarse and vulgar man who too often says what is on his mind before it is processed by his gray cells. This has and will, unless he mends his ways, cause many problems for him and the United States if he were to be elected president. Nevertheless, I am still going to vote for him for no other reason than the alternative, presumably Hellery Clinton, is far far worse. For, although she is often more careful with what she says, what she will do will certainly be more onerous. She will continue the downhill slide instigated by Obummer and dictated by her bible, "Rules for Radicals" by Saul Alinsky.

So here comes another of my tiresome lists ... noting what I think would likely occur were this vixen elected:

- Our Supreme Court would be packed with loyal liberals who would destroy our Constitution in a few short years ... first to go would be much of our Bill of Rights.

- Globalism would replace nationalism. Our foreign policy would still tilt ... nay tumble toward the Muslim world at the certain expense of our relationship with Israel ... but to the applause of most of our U.N. antagonists. Israel may not even exist at the end of her term(s).

- Any semblance of our U.S. borders or our border security would continue to vanish and we would be inundated with immigrants of all stripes and undesirables ... all of whom would be registered Democrat just as they were signed up for welfare benefits. We would become a sanctuary country.

- As a consequence domestic terrorist attacks would certainly increase as our country would spawn many more E.U.-like "no-go" hellholes and petitions for the imposition of localized Sharia law

- Our welfare system would be expanded beyond imagination with universal free health care, expanded SSI, freeloader payoffs, free higher education, food stamps, etc., etc. to insure that its recipients were obliging to the government for their forever subsistence. The nanny state would become permanent.

- As a consequence our national debt would balloon beyond our ability to pay it back without crippling inflation or default ... both unacceptable alternatives.

- The Clinton Foundation would compromise many American values, national secrets, and prerogatives for disguised payoffs in order to insure the comfortable future for its many posse members ... basically a corrupt criminal enterprise.

- With Bill Clinton as an avatar, our traditional social contracts of hard work, piety and morality would deteriorate into nothingness. The family unit would be replaced by the communal "village." Diversity and inclusion, those diametrically opposed watchwords would continue to oppressively rule our lives. Racial tensions would mount even further.

Enough? Maybe not all these penalties would occur exactly as I have predicted, but pooh-pooh them at your peril.

Of course, take heed you suburban housewives ... Bernie, as president, would be still worse on most counts.

Border Walls

Our feckless Secretary of State, John F. Kerry (who briefly served in Vietnam), recently told the graduates of Northeastern University that they should be prepared to live in a borderless world ... for no wall can be built high enough to deter those terrorists who want to harm us ... see: Washington Examiner Article.

Yes, Gigolo John, you are correct ... but such a wall, combined with vigorous enforcement of our existing immigration laws, can significantly reduce the odds of such an occurrence. I guess that today's graduates can't understand this distinction.

Perhaps, John, we shouldn't have locks on our doors because some burglars can climb through our second floor windows ... or have bars on our jails because occasionally we lose a resourceful escapee?

We, in the United States, are now saddled with senior management who have an Utopian one-world view and are determined to implement this idiot ideology even if the vast majority of their countrymen disagree. This could easily be thought of as treasonous ... but, as anyone who has watched this Boston Brahmin's braggadocios career, this wouldn't be the first time he skipped across this red line.

How a man so stunningly stupid and duplicitous as Kerry can rise to the positions of power he has held causes one (me) to question our society's basic underpinnings. Possibly George W. Bush's greatest achievement was keeping this numbskull from "reporting for duty" at the White House.

Robert Frost had it right ... "Good fences make good neighbors."

Apple vs. the FBI

Apple's dilettante CEO, Tim Cook, to me, is grandstanding about not giving the FBI access to the terrorist Syed Farook's IPhone ... see: ABC News Story. Already the FBI has a court order and, the way I read it, it doesn't want to compromise Apple's security mechanism on this or any other of its devices. This is not magic. I have a little experience in this area. Apple knows exactly how and where the access code is stored in this IPhone's memory ... which is the property of San Bernardino County anyway. All Apple would have to do is to recover this access code ... without revealing its process ... and provide it to San Bernardino County which then would provide it to the FBI.

Problem solved ... and, possibly, a few more terrorists might be caught ... and Tim Cook would have grown a few inches taller in the eyes of the American public. And in the future, this court-order process might be repeated whenever there is a sufficient and compelling need for such access into IPhones. I'm sure that the government might even be willing to pay Apple for their efforts.

Yes, I also realize that Apple might not sell quite as many IPhones to criminals and terrorists ... small price to pay.

Funding our Exectioners

It was a common yet strange practice in medieval England for the condemned to give a tip to their executioners in order to be dispatched quickly and cleanly. It seems that a similar warped generosity extends today to funding those terrorists who intend to do us in. Many mosques in the United States with links to known terrorist organizations have received millions of dollars of taxpayer money ... sometimes with very strained logic ... see: Daily Caller Story.

This is just another disturbing example of why our political system is failing us and why this guy Donald Trump has captured the hearts and minds of many perplexed Americans.

Another Liberal Lie

I have heard at least a half dozen times in the last few days that since 9/11 the United States has allowed 1.5 million Middle Eastern immigrants into our country and, so far, none have turned out to be terrorists. This seemed like obvious BS to me so I resorted to Google and, in a trice, I found this reference ... see: ABC Article. Here we learn that a few dozen suspected terrorists have arrived on our shores as political refugees ... including former bomb makers (IEDs) from Iraq.

More importantly, the Tsarnaev family was granted political asylum in the U.S. in 2002. As we all should know, this family produce the two Boston Marathon bombers. Technically the Tsarnaev brothers are not Middle Eastern (being from near Chechnya) but they are surely Muslim terrorists.

And here is a much more extensive list of terrorists who have been captured here since 9/11: The majority of which are Muslims and, I suspect, many had been welcomed into the United States. Take a little time to adsorb this extensive list of bad guys ... see: Wikipedia Entry.

There was also today this article which listed more terrorists here in the U.S. ... see:UK Mail Article.

It does seem that such false factoids quickly find there way into the popular narrative and, once there, are more difficult to eradicate than kudzu.

Afterward: See also: Breitbart Article.

Liberal Solutions

Why is it that so many liberal solutions to societal problems don't work? Now liberals generally are not stupid ... nor are they, I assume, trying to make matters worse. But all too often their well-meaning solutions to imbalances in our society end up costing a fortune and destroying an existing working mechanism. What is that old saying ... if it ain't broke, don't fix it?

It isn't difficult to come up with examples of these liberal failings here in the United States  How about their insisting on dealing with terrorists inside of our criminal justice system? How about their not enforcing many of our immigration policies (George W. Bush included)? How about their continued diminishing of our military hegemony? How about their expansion of our welfare system beyond reason? How about their creating of mechanisms that encourage voter fraud? How about their self-serving roiling of race and gender relations? How about their attempts to overthrow our gun freedoms? How about their penchant for deficit spending (ditto George W. Bush)? How about even their continued attempts to centralize powers away from the people?

To be fair, there are occasional liberal ideas that do work ... at least for a time ... like social security, and some reasonable welfare benefits. (Many might also claim that the roll-back of slavery and the Jim Crow laws were liberal wins ... but it was just the opposite.) But, when such successes are accomplished, liberals double down, triple down, and even quadruple down until such benefits are crushed under their inherent weaknesses.

Open Borders

A self-described “super liberal” friend said yesterday that he believed in open borders … no constraints whatsoever on who might enter the United States. This attitude stems, I believe, from equating today’s situation with the waves of immigrants that have historically populated this country and, obviously, made it stronger. To me this is a false equivalence for a number of reasons:

1)     Past legal immigration was closely monitored to keep out aliens that had contagious diseases. Our former federal processing centers on the east and west coast would send such individuals back home or quarantine them until they were deemed safe to be released into the general population. Even illegal immigrants, once caught, would be so processed. Today the Obama administration is threatening doctors who raise the specter of such a public health crises as a result of this new wave of unprocessed illegal immigrants … see: Fox News Story.

If we were to have open borders, not only would we surely suffer a number of such epidemics, but we also would be inundated with dangerous plant, animal and insect invaders brought into our country under such uncontrolled circumstances. Imagine the Asian jumping carp or the winter moth times a thousand!

2)     In past times, immigrants of all stripes were expected to be self reliant and not go on the public dole. In fact existing U.S. citizens were required to guarantee in writing that this would not occur. Today, given the monumental growth of the welfare state, no such checks exist. The pull of free money and free high-quality health care is what draws many illegal and legal immigrants to this country… see: Breitbart Story.

If our Social Security System is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, how will it pay for millions more foreigners who never contributed a penny, yet are or will be receiving its benefits? And, if we don’t have enough doctors to treat our returning veterans, how in heaven’s name are we going to minister to the influx of all of the world’s infirmed who can make it to our shores?

3)     The United States has awoken, as a result of the 9/11 World Trade Center heinous attack, to the dangers of international terrorism, particularly that of radical Islam. Open borders would virtually guarantee that we would be inundated with such bad apples wishing to establish a caliphate here … and lop off the head of anyone who objects. I guess my liberal friend thinks that, he, being of an age, would escape unharmed … but I doubt if his progeny would.

4)     In the past, America was a "melting pot" for the millions of our immigrants. Today, this country is not assimilating immigrants to the same degree that it once did. There are now many communities of transnationals which have established themselves as microcosms of their native land. Newer Internet and television technology has enabled them to never learn English nor adapt to the American culture … even after multiple generations. (Islamic honor killings still occur in this country on a regular basis.) Yes, this diversity can enrich American culture, but the reverse is also true … if it were allowed or even forced to happen.

5)     Last point … a tsunami of immigrants into the U.S. would have an incalculable impact on the economics of both this country and the countries from which they emigrated.  Open U.S. borders would most likely draw people from both ends of the bell curve … the affluent and the impoverished of the world. Yes, Silicone Valley would get all the engineers it wants (at cheaper rates than today), but also the trade unions would be annulated by the availability of building-trade workers at well below today’s wage rates.

We see this already happening. Would these people be visible to the IRS and local governments?  Probably not.  Therefore, the only solution to the ability of governments to survive would be to impose a value-added (national sales) tax.  And of course, this would very likely be on top of existing taxes which would squeeze the middle class in this country to the point of near extinction.

Even the European Union is considering re-establishing internal border controls as a result of problems occurring there due to illegal immigrants … see: Notre-Europe Story. No, I am quite sure that open borders in the United States would be horrendously distorting and a disaster of monumental proportions. We need a lot more head and much less heart in this debate (and in our administration).

Juxtaposition LI

Senator Harry Reid
Cockroach

Senator Reid just called Clive Bundy's supporters "domestic terrorists" ... see:Politico Story. Apparently crossing Dirty Harry's son (who, with the Chinese, had designs on the land on which rancher Bundy was grazing his cattle) brings out the best in this scurrying Blattodea ... see: Newsmax Story.

Just how evil can a public figure be?
