Curry Favor

Steph Curry, the sensational 3-point shooting point guard for the NBA's Golden State Warriors, doesn't believe that the U.S. put men on the moon almost 50 years ago ... see: NBC News Story. Now, NASA has offered to prove to Curry that he is mistaken ... but, given his mistrust of these original claims, I doubt if he will be convinced.

This hoax, if true, would be the mother of all fake news ... in which lefties like Steph, we are told,  don't believe. Huh?

It seems that every sea-change event -- Pearl Harbor, flying saucers, 9/11, WMDs in Iraq -- brings doubters out of the woodwork ... in some cases justifiably ... like the reaction against global warming alarmists. So we must live with and ignore such doubters  ... and get on with our lives. Or maybe we can claim that Steph Curry has never made a 3-point basket?

Hosers

Ivanka Trump, the honored guest of Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, together with our UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, all attended a new Broadway play opening on Wednesday night called "Come From Away." This musical (shades of "Hamilton") is about how a small town with a big airport in Newfoundland, Gander, warmly welcomed an almost doubling of its population when 6,579 plane passengers were stranded when their planes were forced to land there on 9/11/2003 ... after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center ... see: CNN Story.

The too obvious message here is that these humble Canadian townsfolk were good and noble when they opened their homes to all these strangers who had "come from away" and therefore we too should be welcoming Syrian and other Middle-Eastern immigrants in this same neighborly spirit. Otherwise, to use that common Canadian slight, we are "hosers." I suppose I will be labeled hard-hearted by pointing out the important differences in this simple-minded comparison:

- These air passengers were obviously short-term guests, whereas the current immigrant influx are to be permanent ... likely requiring long-term public assistance -- money, medical, housing, food and schooling

- Most of these air passengers were from a similar culture and language as the Newfoundlanders ... not so with these new immigrants being recommended.

- It was quite unlikely that there were any terrorists, disease-ridden, or other unsavory types secreted among these airline passengers. These Syrian and other Middle-Eastern immigrant are usually portrayed as just women and children, whereas the opposite is true ... well over half are testosterone-laden young men ... as many countries in Europe are now finding out.

Conflating these two "come from away" populations to make political hay is naive, condescending and even dangerous. The irony of using an event surrounding 9/11 to argue for more Middle-Eastern immigration is obviously lost on the backers of this play. We are living in treacherous times which require mature thinking and actions. There is no reason that stringent and rational filters cannot be placed on our immigrant experience ... despite what a few fuzzy-headed federal judges might wish.

Afterward: I recently discovered the derivation of the"hoser"  term. Apparently it originally referred to people who siphoned gasoline from neighbors' cars using a length of garden hose.

Trump Lies

A reader has sent a number of Trump "lies" compiled by The Huffington Post which, as I have promised him, I republish here without detailed refutation. I have also removed the HuffPo's refutations because, given the political bent of this site, this suggests that there may be a bias in its analyses, I therefore leave it up to you, dear reader, to decide on the veracity of things. Do your own research and make up your own mind. (Try not using HuffPo or Snopes exclusively.) Here are Trump's "lies" according to the HuffPo:
  • We [the HuffPo] start with his Nov. 21 claim to have watched on television as thousands and thousands² of Muslims in New Jersey were cheering the fall of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
  • Trump boasted that he predicted Osama bin Laden.
  • Trump heard that Obama is thinking about signing an executive order where he wants to take your guns away.
  • Trump claimed his campaign is 100 percent self-funded.
  • Trump said his tax plan is revenue neutral.
  • Trump told the story of a 2-year old who got autism a week after the child got a vaccine.
  • Trump said Mexico doesn¹t have a birthright citizenship policy.
  • Trump denied that he ever called female adversaries some of these things:fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals.
But, for myself, looking over this list, I can't help but to conclude that, except for the statement on his tax plan, these supposed falsehoods are pretty thin gruel ... say compared to our current bunch of Pinocchios.

NFL

The National Football League (NFL) got none of my TV eyeball-time on Sunday ... nor is it likely to coax me back anytime soon. This is because this Congress-created monopoly has done nothing to nip in the bud the grotesque Black Lives Matter protests during the playing of our national anthem and our honored remembrances of 9/11. Four Miami Dolphin players "took a knee"  on Sunday and one Kansas City Chief raised his fist during our Francis Scott Key musical paean. (Their names are unimportant.) Yes I know these babinzos have every right to protest against their real and imagined slights by our nation ... independent of the millions of dollars they get annually to run around a grassy field. But I also have the same right to call them uneducated boobs and refuse to frequent their advertisers or appreciate the fans who grease their palms.

The NFL is one of the "circus" parts of the strategy that governments use to keep their people pacified, viz, "bread and circus." But I am growing out of such pampering. I've got other things I can do with my Sundays. And I have other reasons ... because of his looking the other way during Colin Kaepernick's protests, his shoddy treatment of the Patriot's Tom Brady, his disallowing the Dallas Cowboys to wear memorial insignias for their slain Dallas policemen, his denial of a player to memorialize 9/11 on his football cleats (see: Breitbart Story) and his generally poor administrative talents ... NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is not loved by many thinking former football fans ... including myself.

So I will wage my puny little protest and eschew this "circus" entertainment that I have in the past so much enjoyed ... until such time as Goodell is gone and the NFL wises up. Until then NFL, for me, stands for nudnicks, flakes and losers.

It's Only Natural

It seems that strictly religious Muslim men, who grow up seeing only women's eyes ... these women being covered from head to toe with burqas, hijabs, etc., has aroused their manly passions to unnatural levels. It was not therefore unusual when we learned that most of the 9/11 terrorists had visited U.S. strip clubs in the days before their heinous mass murders. And we have also seen many Islam men who have recently migrated into Europe too often behaving in antisocial or criminally sexual ways.

And it will therefore also not be surprising that about 80% of what has been discovered stored on the  laptop computers of captured or killed ISIS terrorists is comprised not of religious devotions or lamentations ... but rather of good old-fashioned pornography ... see: Daily Caller Story.

No wonder these Muslim zealots are so anxious to rendezvous with the 72 virgins that they are promised when they die martyrs ... it's only natural.

Torture

I generally have liked Senator Dianne Feinstein of California … certainly when juxtaposed next to her state’s chamber mate, Senator Barbara Boxer, the essence of liberal claptrapedness. But when you let your hurt feelings dictate your lashing out at our intelligence community at the cost of what little prestige the United States might still have abroad and the possible jeopardizing of intelligence assets around the world … you have taken a step onto the dark side ... and are now on my feces list. Senator Feinstein took to the Senate floor yesterday to excoriate the C.I.A. for its role in the “torture” of captured Al Qaeda prisoners who had orchestrated the murder of 3,000 Americans … see: New York Times Article for some slightly biased reportage.

Obviously the definition of torture is generally proscribed by the beliefs of the beholder and I don’t intend to debate it here except to say that too many liberals endorsed these coercive practices right after 9/11 … only to perform a elaborate pirouette years later when the politics permitted. And when you incur the wrath of former Senator Bob Kerrey, another unrepentant liberal, Senator Feinstein, you clearly have let your ego trump your patriotism … see: USA Today OpEd.

This California senator certainly has the institutional memory to understand what Senator Church’s Intelligence Committee’s attack on the C.I.A. did back in the 1970s. Its resulting restrictions on our intelligence community probably had a lot to do with the failures that led to 9/11. Yet she has let a few misguided C.I.A. operative’s actions color her indictment of this agency which, in turn, may result in similar terrorist atrocities on our soil in the future. But alas, Senator Feinstein, like Senator Church, will likely by then be long gone and not suffer any of these consequences … and the merry-go-round will return our intelligence community to a position of “whatever it takes.”

As far as I am concerned, the real torture is watching these misguided bubbleheads give away the farm due to a case of overweening moral superiority.

Afterward: I think I may have come up with an interesting definition of torture -- when you are interrogating a prisoner, if you do less to him than what he would do to you if the roles were reversed, then it is not torture. (Therefore equal or greater abuse compared to what he would do to you would be torture.)

Pulling No Punches

On the anniversary of 9/11 and in the midst of battling some unspecified health problems, W. Lewis Amselem, the writer of the Diplomad 2.0 blog and long-time career U.S. diplomat, has let go with both barrels in his latest post. Apparently President Obama’s equivocating about the true nature of ISIS/ISIL and President George W. Bush’s statement that Islam is a “religion of peace” has caused this clear-eyed writer to pick up his poison pen to state unequivocally that our centuries-long battle is with Islam … not radical Islam or Jihadis … but with Islam itself. He says:
The war with Islam did not begin September 11, 2001. It began some 1400 years ago and continues. That September 11 was just a reminder that we live in a world of Islamic war..
If you are of a mind to confront this type of unvarnished reality, I suggest that you read his post here: Year Thirteen in a 1400-Year War, the other posts referenced therein, and the attached comments. I know we “heathens” all like to shrink from the realization that there might be legions of people who, to various degrees, might like to kill us (or to join with them). The Diplomad, even in his infirmity, does not … he here is pulling no punches.

Management 101

His First Challenge
Fresh from his disastrous faux pas about not having a strategy to combat ISIS, President Obama today in Estonia tried to reassure Americans and the world ... on the same day we learned that ISIS has beheaded another of our journalist ... that we will shrink ISIS into a "manageable problem" ... seePolitico Story. We have also learned tonight on Fox News that the United States has not supplied the Iraqi Kurds with the heavy weaponry that we promised them many weeks ago.

I suppose that being a community organizer and a college lecturer did not supply our fearless leader with the tools ... nor the understanding of what true management is. And on-the-job training is not effective unless the trainee is on the job. If President Obama chooses not to attend the majority of his security briefings or if he allows his National Security Advisor, Susan Rice, to travel to China on the anniversary of 9/11, he clearly knows next to nothing about management ... let alone running the country that is supposed to be leading the free world.

Effectively reading from a Teleprompter is not going to make the slightest difference in how the United States manages its way through the mine fields that Obama has allowed to be sewn around the world by Islamic extremists and Russia's Putin ... when instead he was stopping the oceans from rising and reducing his golfing handicap to five.

Open Borders

A self-described “super liberal” friend said yesterday that he believed in open borders … no constraints whatsoever on who might enter the United States. This attitude stems, I believe, from equating today’s situation with the waves of immigrants that have historically populated this country and, obviously, made it stronger. To me this is a false equivalence for a number of reasons:

1)     Past legal immigration was closely monitored to keep out aliens that had contagious diseases. Our former federal processing centers on the east and west coast would send such individuals back home or quarantine them until they were deemed safe to be released into the general population. Even illegal immigrants, once caught, would be so processed. Today the Obama administration is threatening doctors who raise the specter of such a public health crises as a result of this new wave of unprocessed illegal immigrants … see: Fox News Story.

If we were to have open borders, not only would we surely suffer a number of such epidemics, but we also would be inundated with dangerous plant, animal and insect invaders brought into our country under such uncontrolled circumstances. Imagine the Asian jumping carp or the winter moth times a thousand!

2)     In past times, immigrants of all stripes were expected to be self reliant and not go on the public dole. In fact existing U.S. citizens were required to guarantee in writing that this would not occur. Today, given the monumental growth of the welfare state, no such checks exist. The pull of free money and free high-quality health care is what draws many illegal and legal immigrants to this country… see: Breitbart Story.

If our Social Security System is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, how will it pay for millions more foreigners who never contributed a penny, yet are or will be receiving its benefits? And, if we don’t have enough doctors to treat our returning veterans, how in heaven’s name are we going to minister to the influx of all of the world’s infirmed who can make it to our shores?

3)     The United States has awoken, as a result of the 9/11 World Trade Center heinous attack, to the dangers of international terrorism, particularly that of radical Islam. Open borders would virtually guarantee that we would be inundated with such bad apples wishing to establish a caliphate here … and lop off the head of anyone who objects. I guess my liberal friend thinks that, he, being of an age, would escape unharmed … but I doubt if his progeny would.

4)     In the past, America was a "melting pot" for the millions of our immigrants. Today, this country is not assimilating immigrants to the same degree that it once did. There are now many communities of transnationals which have established themselves as microcosms of their native land. Newer Internet and television technology has enabled them to never learn English nor adapt to the American culture … even after multiple generations. (Islamic honor killings still occur in this country on a regular basis.) Yes, this diversity can enrich American culture, but the reverse is also true … if it were allowed or even forced to happen.

5)     Last point … a tsunami of immigrants into the U.S. would have an incalculable impact on the economics of both this country and the countries from which they emigrated.  Open U.S. borders would most likely draw people from both ends of the bell curve … the affluent and the impoverished of the world. Yes, Silicone Valley would get all the engineers it wants (at cheaper rates than today), but also the trade unions would be annulated by the availability of building-trade workers at well below today’s wage rates.

We see this already happening. Would these people be visible to the IRS and local governments?  Probably not.  Therefore, the only solution to the ability of governments to survive would be to impose a value-added (national sales) tax.  And of course, this would very likely be on top of existing taxes which would squeeze the middle class in this country to the point of near extinction.

Even the European Union is considering re-establishing internal border controls as a result of problems occurring there due to illegal immigrants … see: Notre-Europe Story. No, I am quite sure that open borders in the United States would be horrendously distorting and a disaster of monumental proportions. We need a lot more head and much less heart in this debate (and in our administration).

Big Bang Theories

The heinous and gruesome Patriot's Day bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon are still being sorted out.  The best reporting that I can find to date is here:  NY Times Article But there are a number of comments and theories that are reflecting on what clearly appears to be a terrorist(s) act:

- President Barack Obama, who has not yet indicated that this was an act of terror, said, that “any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice.” … virtually the same pledge he gave shortly after the Benghazi terrorist attacks in which four Americans were killed … over six empty months ago.  Please reference: ABC News Story.

- Attorney General Eric Holder may think that these attacks were an act of “sports-related violence” just as he is thought to have caused the labeling of the Fort Hood shootings (in which 13 Americans were slaughtered and 30 injured by a Muslim shouting “Allahu Akbar”) “an act of workplace violence”  Please reference: Main Justice Story.

- Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, I think, might have called these deadly explosions another “failure of human understanding” like he did the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11.  Please reference: Boston Globe Story.

- Obama's "neighbor," Bill Ayers  has been reliably reported to be in the Chicago area still, and, although he enjoys a good bombing now and then, could not be connected to this incident. Please reference: NY Times Story.

Afterward:  To see some pictures of possible bombers see: Infowars Link
