The Death of Humor

Comedian Tim Conway died recently ... and apparently so has much humor in American life. Some of Conway’s famous skits on the Carol Burnett show were side-splittingly funny ... the dentist’s erroneous Novocain shots (see above), his Swedish executive’s dealing with a clueless secretary (played by Burnett). He and Harvey Korman (passed in 2008) wee always tear-bringing hilarious together.

This kind of broad humor has pretty much disappeared from the American entertainment scene. If it is not dead, it is certainly on life support. What often passes for comedy in late night TV and variety shows is nothing but political applause lines bashing the Right. Kinda sad ...

And, ironically, this lack of laughs is occurring in a target-rich environment. Think of what could be panned —  “safe spaces,” “white privelege” (actually Dave Chappelle did a clever treatment of this subject ... but quite a while ago), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, un-free speech, the Green New Deal, the snowflake generation, the Mueller Russian hoax, diversity/inclusion hypocrisy, DNA testing, etc. I did offer a possible funny treatment of this last subject once on this blog ... see: DNA Test. No?

Sometimes it feels that even President Trump is more jocular than Saturday Night Live’s lame skits

Silly Season

President Trump has said and tweeted some things that rub many people the wrong way. In fact I strongly suspect that Trump secretly relishes tweaking his detractors. And this tactic very often works. Liberals, progressives, much of the media, even many squishes in the establishment ,,, and their fellow travelers ... are tying themselves in granny knots to show their contempt for our newly elected president. It does seem that one is not allowed to go half-way in exhibiting one's "resistance" to Trump.

So we have a D-list comedian, Kathy Griffen, pretending to cut off Trump's bloody head, late-night TV and SNL sapping the imaginations of their writers trying to smear with innuendo and even slander Trump. We are even taken aback by Stephen Colbert saying that Trump is Putin's cock holster (implying fellatio). The list goes on and on exhaustively. Now we see the New York City Public Theater putting on Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" in which Caesar is dressed as Trump and is stabbed to the cheers of the partisan crowd (described in the above paragraph) ... see: Daily Wire Story

This Trump "resistance" has become so commonplace, sophomoric, banal and even sinister that we are clearly entering a silly season. Liberals are straining at the yoke to find new ways of insulting Trump ... made even more frustratingly inane by the fact that these intended insults seem to roll right off of our president's back. As a result of this overdoing of this Trump Derangement Syndrome, those on the left are in danger of becoming parodies of themselves ... kinda like a skit out of Monty Python ... if they haven't crossed this threshold already.

The Resistance

We are living in interesting times wherein there is a strident and seemingly widespread resistance to our current Trump administration ... unfortunately even some of it from within the administration itself ... as witnessed by the continued embarrassing security leaks. The energy in this resistance over-states its actual support as much of Middle America seems to understand the time-worn dynamic of how those on the left ... much of the print media, many entertainers, some judges, SNL, paid agitators, prog politicians, cable TV talking heads, even some foreign leaders ... are over-reacting to a few greenhorn missteps by the Trump posse.

Many on the left ... Meryl Streep, Michael Moore, Al Franken, Rosie O'Donnell, Chuck Schumer, Lena Dunham, Mark Cuban, Elizabeth Warren, etc. ... are all elbowing each other out of the headlines ... fishing to be first in the public's eye with even more outrageous Trump and Company smears.

And John Hinderaker, like always, has it pretty much right in his Powerline Blog diagnosis of the double teaming that SNL and the AP perform almost every weekend since Trump was inaugurated. Their purpose has clearly expanded well beyond humor to delegitimizing our current administration ... see: Powerline Blog. This is verification of the extent and vigor of the resistance I am noting above. Somehow, I think that these naysayers will eventually tire of concocting their innuendo and fake news and Trump will prevail ... just like he did in the general election. He will "punch through" this picket line of pikers.

Black List

Fun in the Sun

President Obama is on top of things. Despite the Ukraine being squeezed to death by the Russian bear, serious delays in Syria destroying its chemical-weapon stockpiles, and 239 Malaysian airline passengers apparently being blown to smithereens by terrorists, he is deeply involved. He has called Vladimir Putin of Russia two times for long conversations. How do we know this? Because we see pictures of him on the telephone. And he is also talking to many world leaders about these many crises. How do we know this? His administration says so in a brief talking point … see: The Hill Story

Not to mention his plethora of serious domestic issues: the Obamacare sigh-up deadline rapidly approaching, the President’s budget proposal being dead-on-arrival in Congress, the administration’s gutting of our military, little or no White House attention to tax reform, our continued national economic lethargy, etc.  Is Obama concerned with all these domestic failings? It must be so … for there is no wringing of hands on the nightly news.

So all must be roses … for our President is hitting the links once again in Key Largo in sunny south Florida.  This time his playing partners are a former basketball great, Valerie Jarrett’s cousin, and a former football star. Why isn’t he in the White House Situation Room with his key advisers mapping out administration actions to all these issues?  Beats me. I guess fun in the sun trumps the serious business of governing … particularly after all that nasty cold weather in Washington.

Yes, President Obama is on vacation again … just two months after an extended three week stint in Hawaii.  In fact, he is on vacation so often that he hardly has time for all his many Democrat fund-raising trips. Do the U.S. ever-alert media make a point of highlighting these derelictions of duty (see: AWOL)? Do we ever hear a tsk-tsk from his many cable-news sycophants? Does Saturday Night Live run stinging parodies about his lack of focus on world and domestic events?  Does an arm-waving Jon Stewart on the Daily Show mock this inattention?  Get serious!  It’s a wonder that we even know he is playing golf in Florida.

And I do ponder what message this sends to Putin?

Saturday Night Dead

Lorne Michaels's Saturday night "comedy" show (Saturday Night Live or SNL) has had quite an impact on Presidential elections.  Effectively it killed Gerald Ford's prospects in 1977 when Chevy Chase continually depected him as a clumsy, bumbling fool.  (Side note: my wife worked part-time at NBC during this period and it was generally understood that Chevy Chase was an arrogant a-hole.)  Then, in the 2008 election, Tina Fey went a long way in destroying John McCain's campaign with her depiction of Sarah Palin as a provincial boob (excuse the expression) with "I can see Russia from my front porch."  (Many voters actually believed that the Alaskan Rogue Elephant had said that ... she hadn't.)

Now, that Mitt Romney seems to have wrapped up the Republican nomination, can we now expect that lefty hatchetman, Mr. Michaels, to try once again to enter the voting booths across the country in November and pull the levers by proxy for The Barry?  The answer is, of course.  The real question is, how will he do this?  My prediction is that it will be by either pointing out Mitt's seeming stiffness, his putting his dog's crate on the roof of his car, or his "ruthlessness" as a 1%-er while running Bain capital.  Maybe ... and probably ... all three ... possibly even some others too.  Also expect the "comedy" writers on The Late Show, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report to do much of the same ... often with a sly vengence.

Wouldn't it be great if somehow Dave Letterman, Lorne Michaels, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Stewart could also be continuously and savagely rediculed on network and cable television?  Unfortunately, it will only happen in my dreams ...
