Income Disparity

Much of the impetus behind the blind drive to a socialist government in the United States derives from the disparity between the rich and the non-rich. This disparity has demonstratively grown in recent years to the point where the super rich and their lavish lifestyles are visible examples to the rest of us of a problem with capitalism. The simple solution to the simple-minded becomes socialism ... that economic policy that is inculcated into our children from kindergarten through graduate school by those pedagogues living in their left-canted ivory towers.

Yes, America now embraces snippets of socialism —  Medicaid, the Earned Income Tax Credit, food stamps, etc. But we don’t yet have the public ownership of the factors of production or services like in Venezuela or Cuba ... where the disparity of income shifts to that between the governors and the governed.

Can this disparity be fixed under capitalism. Yes, it has in the past through anti-trust legislation ... which should be resurrected to deal with the new technology trusts that have reared their ugly heads in the 21st century ... whereas fixing this disparity with a socialists regime can only be accomplished by bringing down our capitalist government ... the goose laying these golden income-disparity eggs.

The time is also ripe for another capitalistic solution to income disparity other than the Bernie Sanders lunacy. And, I can’t believe that ham-fisted laws that restrict corporate compensation ratios will fix things. But perhaps our tax code could be used ... maybe by making taxes on capital gains progressive like that on incomes ... since much of these stratospheric executive compensations come from stock options? And finally, eliminating the  “carried interest” tax loophole that the Republicans promised to deep-six three years ago. What’s the delay Donald?

Afterward: Restrict this progressive taxing proposal to only capital gains achieved though stock option grants.

Fond Memories

Those were the the days when:

- Commercial breaks were 60- second spots for a single company or product

- Movies caused you to suspend disbelief

- Democrats didn't disparage their country

- Higher education didn't require you to mortgage your future

- There was a "free speech" movement

- Food stamps were actual stamps

- Our immigration system was working

- PBS didn't have "promotional" interruptions

- It was impolite to be on your phone in a social setting

- News stories gave you who, what, when and where

- Schools were safe spaces in and of themselves

- Voters did not outnumber those registered

- Gee, that old LaSalle ran great

Taxing Times

Having been nominated by Trump to replace Steve Mnuchin as Treasury Secretary who was fired after his tax reform plan bit the dust in Congress, I now offer the following outline for a revamped income tax system in the United States:

- Income is calculated to include ALL federal, state and local government transfer payments (social security, food stamps, section 8 housing, welfare payments, pensions, student loan forgiveness, investment income, etc.) other than government or private insurance payments like medical benefits. Of course, all other standard income is included ... no exceptions.

- Tax brackets are: 40% (above $1 million), 30% (above $500,000), 20% (above $100,000), 10% (above $50,000) ... below $50,000 EVERYONE must pay $100. These monetary numbers are adjusted yearly for inflation.

- Standard deduction (0nly above $50,000) = 5 percentage points off of the above rates if no itemizing. If itemizing, then the sum total of all deducted items taken of whatever type (dependent credits, carried interest, state and local taxes, mortgage interest, child care, solar panels, investment losses, etc.) is limited to 10 percentage points off of the above rates.

- Eliminate all items that are equivalent to welfare payments which result in a negative income tax (like the earned income tax credit). Everyone should pay at least $100 to the running of our federal government. This goes double for any and all government employees (including Congress).

- Once one's income taxes are paid, such payers receive a receipt from the government which can't be counterfeited and which is required for any future employment, government transfer payments and international travel.

- The business community's tax rate is 20% on ALL internationally-consolidated GAAP net income, NO exceptions. Individuals who try to file as corporations will be executed.

QED

Afterward: The strategy of not outlawing any particular deducation takes the wind out of the sails of all these special interest groups' lobbyists. Congress can say that no particular deduction is eliminated even theough, in toto, they are.

Circus Circus

In order to keep the populus appeased, the Romans offered bread and circus ... food and entertainment. This formula has been applied over and over through the ages ... including here in the United States where food stamps, free school lunchs and a myriad of other government programs are meant to combat hunger. On the entertainment front ... local, state and national governments give all types of incentives to sports teams to soothe their restless rabble ... tax breaks, stadium financial grants, promotional efforts, etc. within limits this is all very understandable.

However, now the circus part of this equation has become a real circus with these Black Lives Matter protests that have morphed into anti-government and anti-Trump silliness. In particular, the NFL and the NBA have become money machines for their respective owners ... yet they are still  dining at the government trough. Moreover, these leagues, with their protests and outspoken players, are haughty enough to now bite the hands that feed them. Perhaps ... no, not perhaps ... it is now time to eliminate all favorable local, state and federal fundings and tax breaks to these two plutocratic sports leagues ... at the very least.

Then perhaps the generous financial rewards proffered to their players might be "adjusted" downward to teach them a little humility and patriotism.
