War is Hell

The son-in-law of a fraternity brother is an Iranian Kurd and a corespondent for the BBC. He recently reported on the brutal killing of a female Kurdish soldier by the Syrian militia under Turkish control. Read the whole narrative here: BBC Story.  Jiyar Gol is his name and he chronicles the roadside murder of Amara Ramas, a member of a ferocious all-female Kurdish brigade. Her fate is an emotion grabber.

It evokes all kinds of thoughts about the horrors of war ... one of which we learned from Stephen Crane in “The Red Badge of Courage” — if you don’t kill the enemy first, they will likely kill you. However, it is how you kill the enemy that makes the difference. Humiliating your enemies before or after dispatching them is what we are dealing with here ... aptly, but ironically, labeled war crimes.

Such war crimes unfortunately too often happen in the heat of battle. Emotions run wild when soldiers see comrades cut down or when the enemy performs heinous acts ... to the point where soldiers often lose control. American soldiers have been known to urinate on Afghan enemy corpses and, after World War 2 ended, German soldiers who refused to surrender (wolverines) were summarily executed by American soldiers.

Does this excuse these Syrian army atrocities? Of course not! But will my feeble words stop such horror. You know that answer. It is quite likely that Kurdish emotions will be inflamed by this incident and revenge will be sought. And on and on. These battles have been going on for hundreds of years and are unlikely to be resolved soon.

I am convinced that revenge and war might be encoded as a sequence in the DNA of most humans. And the only time the world will find John Lennon’s imagined peace might be at some distant time when science can identify this sequence and repair it. In the meantime there will be lots of senseless killings such as Amara’s.

The Hammer

Turkey’s Erdogan has backtracked  from his defiance of Trump and the US over his invasion of Syria. First, he claimed that he wouldn’t meet with VP Pence and SecState Pompeo. Then he caved in that defiance and met with them ... the result of which was an announced ceasefire with the Kurds in Syria ... see: Yahoo News Story and Video. The terms of this deal, at first blush, seem a win for Trump and our allies, the Kurds. Maybe so ... we will see how well the Turkish follow-through is.

But, if Erdogan does live up to this capitulation, it would seem Trump and company had a pretty big hammer in these discussions ... for Erdogan is a very proud and powerful man. I would love to know exactly what this hammer was. Were US economic  sanctions enough? Or did Putin or Xi come charging over the hill to Trump’s rescue?

On Wednesday, 129 House Republicans voted for a Democrat-sponsored resolution condemning Trump’s decision to pull our troops out of Syria after Turkey invaded. Only 60 GOPers voted against this premature resolution. I suspect that, given a re-vote, things would come out differently today.

Ready, Shoot, Aim

Many politicians have waded in on the Turkey invasion of Syria. I’ve even put my toe in the water ... see: Tough One. The vast majority of politicians have thumped Trump for his tough decision ... often without knowing all the give-and-take behind Trump’s stance. Maybe some circumspection is called for.

Somehow it appears to this observer that there is more to Trump’s move than is immediately apparent ... since abandoning previous allies comes with a large potential cost. When he ran for president, Trump had pledged to remove US troops from foreign entanglements ... and this is part of his rational for stepping aside during Turkey’s rash move.

But this, as Treasury Secretary Mnuchin says, is obviously a very complex situation. Recently there is some friction between the Kurds and American forces ... see: Breitbart Story, Turkey’s membership in NATO makes things more difficult (is Trump setting it up for expulsion?), Trump has been trying to force countries in the region to step up to their responsibilities, etc. And I’m sure that there are many sub rosa issues which few politicians understand.

Therefore, it would seem to me that a little time should be invested in fully understanding things before stepping in front of the national media and saying words that might have to be eaten later.

Tough One (Updated)

I generally agree with Trump’s policies ... however, his recent decision to abandon the Kurds in northern Syria by pulling out our trip-wire troops has me scratching my head. If this scenario plays out, Turkey will invade Syria and try to massacre our Kurdish allies and likely also release the thousands of IsIS prisoners (including many Europeans) that the Kurds are now guarding. See: BBC Story.

I realize that Trump has vowed to reduce America’s foreign involvements ... a good thing, but this recent decision seems ill-timed and probably ill-advised. I hope I’m wrong ... and Trump is not folding to that tyrant Erdogan. If Trump has reasons for this decision beyond what has been revealed, I think he needs to communicate this rational to the American people post haste.

Afterward: President Trump claims that a primary reason for pulling our troops out is that those countries from which these 10,000 ISIS prisoners cam from won’t take them back and jail them. Perhaps we should just transport them back to their countries unannounced and let the devil take the hindquarters. And then warn Turkey to keep its hands off the Kurds ... or else!

L to S

It is difficult to believe that the simple change of an L to an S ... ISIL to ISIS ... has made such a dramatic difference in just 10 months. Now ISIS fighters who just last year, as ISIL, were cutting the heads off Christians ... now are befouling themselves when captured by the Kurds in Iraq. It is clear to me that Obama was merely going through the motions of trying to defeat that "JV team, ISIL" .... unwilling to bomb their oil-truck convoys that funded these murders ... or really carry the fight to these monsters. Our community organizer's years of pretending to "degrade ISIL" were a sham and it cost the American taxpayers billions and created a worldwide immigration crisis which, in turn, promulgated hundreds of terrorist attacks.

Now our new president has changed this enemy's name to ISIS and promised to DEFEAT them ... and is doing just that by unleashing his military and arming the Kurds. And this bit of simplicity is clearly working. I suspect it will take many years until historians recognize this truth ... that is, unless Ken Burns tells the tale.

I also suspect, nay predict, that the same scenerio may soon be taking place in Afghanistan as it becomes clear to the Taliban that its opposition is now serious about destroying them.

Turkey Trot

Turkey is a full member of NATO and thus is a prime ally of the western world ... at least in name and form. However, this Muslim nation has drifted so far away from Ataturk's secular vision and from its responsibilities in this NATO alliance that serious thought should be given to showing it the door.

The President of Turkey, Recep Erdogan, took the opportunity of Pope Francis's visit to Turkey recently to denounce the West in terms devoid of any sugar-coating. He spat out:
I speak openly, foreigners love oil, gold, diamonds, and the cheap labor force of the Islamic world ... they like the conflicts, fights and quarrels of the Middle East. Believe me, they don’t like us ... they look like friends, but they want us dead, they like seeing our children die.
Pretty hostile words from the leader of a friendly nation. To read a fuller context of this diatribe against his alliance mates (including specific slurs against the United States), see: Powerline Comments

Pope Francis on the other hand turned the other cheek and praised Turkey for its humanitarian assistance in the ISIS conflict next door in Syria and Iraq. They both made nice-nice and then the Pope was shown Erogan's humble new abode ... a $600 million presidential palace. For more about this ecumenical belly-rub see: NY Times Article.

Obviously, the Pope either hasn't read the newspapers or has chosen to ignore Turkey's deviousness in allowing ISIS to attack the Kurdish town of Kobani, Syria from inside Turkish territory. Clearly Erdogan's hatred of the Kurds outshines his love for the West... see: The Guardian Article.

It surely looks to me like Turkey is a turkey ..

Inertia

A body at rest tends to stay at rest. Despite the boast that U.S. airplanes have struck northern Iraq over 180 times (and now French aircraft too), it doesn't seem to be slowing ISIS down. Just in the last 24 hours over 70,000 Syrians have fled across the border into Turkey ... see: Enews Story. These refugees are mostly Kurds which does not make Turkey all that happy ... for it has been oppressing this ethnic minority also ... but not by putting their heads on stakes ... not yet anyway. When our fearless leader issued his call-to-arms last week, we had already made some 150 air strikes in Iraq. So this means that, since then, we have had just 30 or so more ... and none yet in Syria.

What in God's name is Obama waiting for? He has been called the "reluctant warrior" ... I think a better name might be the "body-at-rest warrior."

The JV Team

The CIA has just tripled the estimated number of jihadists who belong to ISIS … the Junior Varsity (JV) team as Obama described it earlier this year … to well over 30,000. This band of bench warmers now have sophisticated American weaponry captured from the Iraqi non-army, huge amounts of cash appropriated from the banks they have overrun in northern Iraq and Syria … augmented daily by millions of dollars from the Iraqi oil they are selling on the black market, and a brutal propaganda machine that rivals what Goebbels had in Nazi Germany.

And their ranks are swelling daily with foreign fighters traveling from about 80 nations around the world through Turkey … eager to fight for the sake of the caliphate … see: CNN Story. Has Obama and his crew conjured up the gumption to defeat this ragtag team? Somehow I doubt that the United States is anywhere close to getting ahead of the curve on this matter. President Obama has been describes as the “reluctant warrior.” I think that Europe and the rest of the Arab world can be categorized as even less eager to enter into this fray. That is the rub.

How do we then proceed? The Iraqi army has shown itself to be ineffectual. We can’t sort the good guys from the bad in the Free Syrian Army. Therefore, the only boots on the ground we really can count on are the Kurds … who for some stupid reason we can’t supply with heavy weapons … and about 1,500 American Special Forces. I don’t think that this will cut it … given the current pace of ISIS growth and "allied" lethargy.  (We won’t even be bombing targets in Syria for a month!) This is why ISIS is rapidly becoming as existential a threat as we have seen since the time of Suleiman and the Ottoman Empire.

I once described President Obama as Mr. Cool … see: Mr. Cool. Unfortunately, I think we now need Mr. Hot at the helm ... and this we can't possibly get for over another two years. It doesn't look good.
