Ping Pong

Most of our problems in the Middle East have to do with our inserting ourselves in the middle of the centuries-long conflict between the Shia and Sunni Muslims. Our overturning of Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, made the Iraqi Shia believe we were on their side ... and Obama’s sucking up to Iran (Shia) reinforced this notion.

But Trump’s dumping of the Iran nuclear deal seemed to indicate we favored the Sunnis. However, the ISIS caliphate was Sunni-based ... and Hillary, with Obama’s permission, seemed to favor these butchers. Then Trump destroyed this caliphate ... with some help from Iran.

And the Shia-Sunni blood feud is also being replicated elsewhere throughout the Middle East ... Saudi Arabia. Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Oman, Turkey, Yemen, Pakistan, Egypt, Gaza ... all but Pakistan predominately Sunni ... where America has difficult problems ... making things even more complex.

And so it goes, back and forth between these Muslim sects (and other offspring sub-sects) like a ping pong match on an Islam table covered in blood. Unfortunately, our troops represent the ping pong ball ... batted back and forth at the cost of U.S. soldiers’ lives and limbs.

Reflections

As this tumultuous year 2016 winds down, I gather my loose synapses into some form of strained logic to reflect on who has been boiling our porridge over our last orbit 'round the sun.

First, the Religion of Peace has only killed a few hundred thousand of us this year ... mostly their kindred souls tragically but, for the rest of us, fortunately. However, their belief that martyrdom rewards them lavishly and lasciviously propels them into the most uncivilized brutality that man can invent. This twisted form of moral immorality is both the reason for this tribe's remarkable successes and, unless corrected, its eventual doom. The primary reason for its rise is that it offers discipline and order in an undisciplined and unordered world. It has become the flickering flame to which many meek seekers are moth-driven. They are clearly charting their, and possibly even our, end.

Second, after an eight year escape from our senses, the American middle has, at least temporarily, recaptured its mojo. We have chosen an unlikely leader who knows how to get things done and is doing things ... most of which seem intent on righting our ship of state after a long meandering voyage with open scuppers. Trump's words and actions are often crude and rude, but he is all we got, so we have given him the helm with our fingers crossed. His choices for his crew who would carry out his mandate are a mite questionable but, I for one, am willing to wait and see ... mostly because he has obviously had more life successes than failures. Yes, there will be some duds appointed. But I suspect he will not be shy with the term, "You're fired!"

Third, the Democrat party has been pulled so far into the outback of loony liberalism that they are going to need a modern-day Moses to lead them back to civilized thought and action. Their travel agents for this sad sojourn, Obummer, Schumer, Hellery, Pelosi, Biden and the like still have the party's ideological credit card and are spending them into policy penury. Unless liberals can find new and more moderate leadership, they will continue to enjoy ballot box failure. Will the Republicans get vindictive toward the left after they assume full power on January 20th? I surely hope so. And, if Trump can fulfill even half of his economic promises, he will likely change the traditional political alliances for a generation.

Fourth, for the first time in my dotage I have some hope for some Mideast pacification. Trump's pledge to put Iran back in the box, his moving our embassy to Jerusalem, his recognition of Egypt's el-Sisi as a Muslim mitigating force, and his (hopefully) persuading Russia to help stop the slaughter in Syria ... all have me optimistic, not for full peace, but at least for detente. My expectation is that his policy in this region will be to reward moderation and punish radicalism ... exactly the opposite of what the current administration has been doing. Why Obummer has pursued this insanity is between him and his Mullah ...

More to come later ...

Brotherhood's Keeper

Are we.the Muslim Brotherhood's keeper? To a certain degree, yes, we already are ... and will be much more so if Hellary Clinton is elected president. The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is, to many, a terrorists organization ... but it's slowly becoming our own terrorist organization as it stealthily insinuates itself into our government. President Obummer has already met with this group multiple times at the White House. And we also know that Hellary's close confidant, Huma Abedin, previously worked for 12 years for the main MB publication and that her family (father, mother, brother) are key executives in the worldwide MB organization. (If you don't know these things, read The Hill Article or, if you prefer, The Washington Post Article.) But now we find out that the Clinton Foundation employed the MB's chief spokesman, Gehad El-Haddad, for a formative five years ... see: Powerline Blog. He is now in prison in Egypt.

During the Obummer administration ... and with its support ... the Muslim Brotherhood under Morsi came within a whisker of turning Egypt into a totalitarian caliphate and now is on trial there for a series of heinous crimes. I would like to believe differently, but I am convinced the the MB tenants are ever so slowly shaping the foreign policy in the United States ... and that we are now on the doorstep of its attempt to duplicate the Egyptian experience here.

I know it is often difficult for we complacent Americans to confront a dangerous future, but now it's decision time folks.

Dissing Us

President  Obummer's reception in China at the current G20 summit was, to say the most, shockingly disrespectful. To me, a possible reason for these almost unprecedented diplomatic slights is simple ...  at the top of our president's agenda is his denigrating ... through word and deed ... of the country he represents ... or, to put a shine on his lassitude, "leading from behind." For a deeper analysis of these shameful Chinese reception incidents, see: Powerline Blog.

And we're not just being dissed by China ... Russia, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, and North Korea openly spit on us at every opportunity. And even many of our former allies, the Philippines, Israel, Brazil, Egypt, and Turkey are crossing the street to avoid tipping their hats to our president ... and thus to the United States.

Why have we become such pariahs to such a wide swath of the world? And all in just eight short years! I've got it! It must be that all these world leaders are, at heart, racists!

Parallel Lines

Is there a parallel to be drawn between the current coup underway in Turkey and what happened in Egypt three years ago? To me, it appears so. Mohamed Morsi, with the tacit support of President Obummer, was elected President in Egypt in a supposedly free election. So was Recep Erdogan reelected in Turkey ... also with a nod from the current U.S. administration. Morsi rapidly began to consolidate his undemocratic control in Cairo by seeding secular Egyptian institutions with his Muslim Brotherhood cronies and fomenting radical unrest. Erdogan has clearly departed from General Mustafa Ataturk's secular vision for Turkish government and has more gradually reimposed autocratic Muslim strictures on the media and those who elected him. He has also been playing footsie with ISIS by allowing it to smuggle Syrian oil and refuges through his country ... and foreign fighters to join ISIS. Morsi clearly found the levers of power intoxicating and lined his and the Muslim Brotherhood's pockets. Erdogan recently built himself a super extravagant  $615 million royal palace ... see: Yahoo New Story ... and his son has been accused of benefiting from ISIS oil smuggling.

Morsi's excesses and attempts to crush Egypt's democracy finally inspired huge street riots and its military to stop this country's slide into a caliphate. General Abdel el-Sisi ousted Morsi who is now on trial with the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood for murder and crimes against the state. Now, Turkey is going through a similarly coup to try to wrest Erdogan firmer grip on power. Whether this coup succeeds is still very much an open question. If it doesn't prevail, the Middle East will certainly experience a great deal more innocent bloodshed.

True to form, the Obummer administration is supporting Erdogan in this putsch attempt whereas I can't help but wonder if Russia's Putin might not be pulling some other strings in this puppet show ... and he doesn't like to lose.

We should know the results of this Turkey trot fairly soon. Is Erdogan gone? Let us hope so ...

Airline Roulette

The crash of the Egyptian airlines this morning now looks very much like it was brought down by a bomb placed aboard by Muslim terrorist(s) ... killing 66 people. Now the Paris authorities are focusing in on the service personnel at Charles de Gaulle airport as a possible source of the smuggling on of an explosive. Now, France has quite a few immigrants from Muslim countries working in its services industries there ... and, since it seems that a portion of such immigrants have ISIS leanings, the chances for more such airline bombings seem to be significant and growing.

Conclusion: flying on airlines these days seems to carry with it a non-zero probability, sometime during your flight, you will hear a large bang and realize, as your stomach moves into your throat and you see your plane disintegrating around you, that you are in for some serious pain ere you are no more. Can we call this airline roulette? Of course the chance of such a catastrophe is not one out of six like with a gun ... at least not yet. But the chances are large enough ... particularly if flying out of France, England, Germany, Belgium, Egypt, or many other countries where liberals might have convinced themselves that loving all Muslims ... and not admitting that some might be jihadis ... is the Christian thing to do.

I know that Donald Trump is xenophobic and is claimed to be a chief reason why ISIS is recruiting many new terrorists. But, on the other hand, I suspect that Josh Earnest, John Kerry, President Obummer and many more of our Washington pajama boys who insist on more Muslim immigration ... and on wearing Islam-terrorist blinders, are far more dangerous than The Donald for increasing the bad airline-roulette odds for the next time I (or you) fly.

Soft Tyranny

Governments, it seems, cannot resist the temptation to centralize their power at the expense of their citizen's basic freedoms. Just in the last few years we have seen this grab obviously occur in Egypt, Turkey, Russia, Greece, United States and now in Germany. (And I am sure there are others, less obvious ones.)

I just added Germany to this list because Merkel's clueless administration is now looking to suppress growing popular dissent to the massive immigration of Muslims into the country ... see: Breitbart Article. This is exactly the wrong path to take ... for over time it becomes increasingly narrow and therefore more difficult to perform a U-turn.

Funny how installed governments, once they start to govern against the will of their peoples, suddenly want to suppress dissent ... usually with an iron fist inside a velvet glove. We saw how Morsi in Egypt, once freely elected, greedily grabbing power too rapidly ... only to be ousted by the military. Erdogan in Turkey is trying the same power grab ... only at a slightly more leisurely pace. Ditto, Putin in Russia. And here at home we have seen Obummer disregard our Constitution as he would yesterday's newspaper.

Germany's Chancellor Merkel, after a series of boneheaded statements favoring the acceptance of Muslim "refugees," is beginning to realize that she has created a massive problem not just for her country, but for just about the entire European Union. So she is having a few second thoughts ... see: Hot Air Story ... yet still while suppressing dissent.

And, although Angela Merkel has cultivated a right of center image, I think her basic politics are Euro-weenie liberal and, under stress, her true tyrannical instincts seem to be taking over. If her German voters don't shortly turn against her, they might not get another chance so poignant. I'm sorry to say that I just don't trust her.

Actions Instead of Words

President Obama just gave an impassioned talk in Turkey in which he reiterated his misbegotten views of Islam ... saying that this religion is not one of violence and that it is Muslims who are the overwhelming victims of those radicals (a bit of a contradiction). He also warned that the West's equating of ISIS with the Muslim faith will only lead to larger recruitment of such terrorists. And he also cautioned that to use a religious test to sift out potential terrorist from among the Syrian immigrants is not the American way and is shameful. For those of you who want to scratch you head over Obama' s full speech, it is reproduced HERE..

Excuse me Mr. President but you are full of hot air. Your actions defy your words. Time and time again you have ignored opportunities to begin to move the Muslim religion away from its radical tendencies and have enabled them to march further into the depths of depravity. Your strategy to "diminish and defeat" these ISIS savages and the other radical elements of Islam does nothing but let them have their leash. Let me count the ways:

- From the very first days of your presidency, you have embraced and met with the Muslim Brotherhood ... a group that has since been identified as a terrorist organization.

- You have diminished and slighted Israel at every opportunity ... the only true ally we have in the Middle East and a major bulwark against the radical elements of Islam.

- When el Sisi, President of Egypt, called for a "reformation" within Islam for it to denounce its more radical tenants, what was your reaction? You stayed stunningly mum.

- You pulled our troops out of Iraq ... only to have this country sink below the waves and spawn ISIS. And instead you created a surge of 30,000 U.S. troops into Afghanistan ... the "good war." However, the rules of engagement you imposed upon then neutered them to the point where nothing got accomplished ... except "green on blue" killings of Americans by turncoat Afghans.

- You have repeatedly crowed that the greatest threat to world security is ... climate change! Yes, climate change!! We don't have enough turnip trucks in the United States for our people to fall off of for this bit of sinister misdirection to be believed.

- President Obama, last year, proudly released five hardened Islamic terrorists back to the battlefield in exchange for the Army deserter, Bowe Bergdahl ... one of the most bone-headed prisoner exchanges in history.

- And when Egypt offered the Palestinian Authority large swaths of the Sinai Peninsula so that they could  expand the Gaza Strip into a real two-state solution, what was your reaction? You refused to even acknowledge this act of statesmanship of Egypt's part.

- Your attempts to neutralize ISIS, for some strange reason, did not include the bombing of its capital, Raqqa, or the elimination of the oil infrastructure that provides much of its operating budget. In fact the number of air sorties over Iraq and Syria that you have authorized are but a tiny fraction of what would be required ... with 2/3rds of our jets returning with their weapons unused. You have no strategy to defeat ISIS ... you barely have any tactics.

-You have cozied up to the Ayatollahs in Iran and given them the resources to continue their sponsorship of Islamic terrorism throughout the world ... and clearly given a path to atomic weapons.

Need I document more of your tilt toward Islam?

Mr. President, I can't imagine that, if you truly believe in the bilge that was spewing out of your pie hole, that you would have behaved, over the last seven years, in the ways other than what I have just recounted.

Scrambled Eggs

The United States' policy in the Middle East is a plate of scrambled eggs. We have been launching air strikes against the ISIS powers (partly Sunni Muslims) in Tikrit, Iraq along side the Iranian-backed Shia Muslim militias ... which were not gaining an edge and are now pulling back ... see: Powerline Blog Comments. In Yemen we are encouraging the Saudis (Sunnis) to attack the Iranian-backed Houthi Shia rebels with both air power and soon possibly with ground troops ... see: Al Jazeera Story. So we are helping Iran with one hand while slapping it down with the other.

The situation is somewhat duplicated in Libya where Egypt (Sunni) is bombing the ISIS forces there ... see: BBC Story. Simultaneously, we are grabbing our ankles in order to close the nuclear deal with Shia Iran. What a mishmash!

And all the while, President Obama (a Shia sympathiser IMHO) is playing golf in Florida ... see: Washington Times Story.

Muslim Martin Luther

I have blogged before about the need for a reformation process within the Muslim religion ... see: A Modern Crusade. The president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has also called for a "revolution" within Islam in order to modernize it ... see: Foxy. And now, that quiet crusader for women's rights within this same religion, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, has outlined the things that she thinks need to change within Islam ... see: Breitbart Article.

The Somali-born Hirsi Ali has taken many courageous stands for women's rights within the Muslim milieu and has been the target of deadly violence ... see: Politico Article. Just last year she was to receive an honorary degree from Brandeis University which then cravenly backed out due to political pressure from the left ... see: New York Times Article. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this remake of Islam into a modern 21st century religion was instigated by this woman? She would then be the Muslim Martin Luther if you will ...

Does anyone also find it strange that the president of the United States has never acknowledged any such reformative thoughts ... when this might be the most effective strategy to combat the growing violent extremist movement within the Muslim world?

Foxy

Fox News did our nation an important service last night when it aired an exclusive interview by its anchor, Bret Baier, with Egypt's president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (see: Fox News Story), in which the Egyptian leader said many things that American citizens should find encouraging:

1) He called for an "Arab-ready" force to battle the Islamic State (ISIS),

2) He asked Muslims around the world to stand up to the more radical elements of Islam in a religious revolution. (I have called it a reformation ... see: A Modern Crusade.)

3) He hinted that the United States may not be on Egypt's side in that it had suspended arms shipments to his country after the coup that ousted that Muslim Brotherhood dictator, Mohammed Morsi ... and still is holding back on critical needed materials.

4) When asked how his Arab allies view America's (read Obama's) leadership in the region, he responded, "Difficult question."

This interview was continually (and strangely) interrupted by transmission difficulties and didn't touch on other issues that would have been revealing ... such as Egypt's offer to the Palestinian Authority to extend the Gaza Strip lands with a huge chunk of the Sinai peninsula ... see: The Impossible Dream.

Clearly the Obama administration is still on the outs with Egypt over el-Sisi's removal of the Muslim Brotherhood from its government, but, in doing so, it is failing to recognize one of the real hopes to counter radical Islam encroachments around the world.

If el-Sisi continues on his current tack, I am convinced that history will treat him with more kindness than Obama. George Will has even gone so far to suggest that el-Sisi should win the Nobel Peace Prize. I concur.

A Modern Crusade

The brutal attack on the staff of the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, yesterday in Paris has raised higher the spectre of a real religious war between Islam and the rest of the world. It seems that the appeasers (like you know who) are still stuck with their heads in the sand maintaining that Muslims are a peaceful lot and that it is just extremists of some unspecified religious persuasion who are grabbing headlines around the world with all these unspeakable butcheries.

George W. Bush was tut-tutted when he opined that the horrors of 9/11 necessitated an extended “crusade” against such Islamic extremism. This word evoked the thought of how those medieval evils were eventually neutered by Christendom’s crusades and Islamic infighting. However, fate has a way of keeping mankind’s next Pax Romana at bay … in that so much of the world’s oil has been found to lie under the sands of Araby and petroleum has become the life blood of our modern society.

As a result of these sea changes, very many in the Muslim world began feeling their oats and decided that they now had the capital wherewithal to convert the rest of us to their backward thinking. And so, oil-funded Islamic proselytizing became the norm which then evoked more and more extremist thinking and actions in a religion unfortunately founded not on love but on butchery. The history of Islam, much like the history of early Christianity, is replete with mayhem and murder. The difference is that Christianity and most of the other world’s religions have evolved out of such insanity. Islam has not … as we continue to experience on almost a daily basis.

Fortunately, there are some Muslims who have recognized this flaw of faith. The current president of Egypt, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, has called for Islam to abandon its extremism and growing militancy because it is corrosive and ultimately futile … see: Fox News Story. (How many U.S. media outlets have carried this item? Has the Obama administration reacted favorably to this ray of hope?) And in the 1920’s Kemal Ataturk in Turkey also recognized this Islamic failing and tried to modernize his country into a secular state. However much of the progress he made is now being rolled back by Turkey’s current fundamentalist president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

I suppose that the conclusion of this short overview is that things are very likely to get worse as ancient Muslim beliefs continue to scrape against modern societies. And, yes, if things maintain their current path, the non-Muslim world (including Russia, India and China) probably is in for a very long and bloody crusade to modernize these zealots of Mohammed’s teachings. That is, unless the likes of Sissi or a neo-Ataturk can bring about a Muslim religious reformation. This, I believe, should clearly be the basis of any foreign-policy push back from the United States’ government against Islamic terrorism.

But all I have witnessed here at home is exactly the opposite.

Afterward: For a slightly more frank view ... see: The Diplomad's Thoughts.

After Afterward: George Will thinks that Sissi should get the next Nobel Peace Prize for this stance. I agree. However, President Obamais, once again, is coming down on the side of the Muslim extremists ... see: Daily Caller Story.
