Vaccination Priorities

On CNN this morning, the Smerconish show posed a viewer question about coronavirus vaccinations ... specifically should the United States follow the recommendation of the World Health Organization ... which is: “The first priority should be to vaccinate some people in all countries rather than all people in some countries.”(Expectedly, WHO’s recommendation overwhelmingly won the liberal viewer vote.)

But, kind readers, we are not the Smerconish audience. So we can make up our own minds. The Trump administration attitude is that, if America pays for and develops the vaccine, then we should be first in line. They liken this to how oxygen masks are utilized in an airplane emergency ... first adults put them on, then children and the infirmed are helped on by these masked adults.

Smerconish offered an alternate view — it’s as though only the first-class passengers get the oxygen masks while those in coach don’t. However, the WHO way ... the globalists way ... would allocate many vaccine doses to millions, perhaps hundreds of millions (or even billions) of people ahead of most Americans. As Smerconish put it ... a healthcare worker in Italy should get vaccinated ahead of a teenage American boy. But, do we wish all the healthcare workers worldwide to be vaccinated before we feel secure in opening our colleges? This may take many months ... perhaps even years!

I have a sneaking suspicion that Bill Gates, Nancy Pelosi, President Trump, Bernie Sanders. France’s Macron, Germany’s Merkel, everyone in WHO and many, many more poobahs will get a Covid-19 shot long before I do. In fact, even if the vaccine is available by November, realistically the Potts clan will wait well into 2021 until we will get it ... even much longer if the Smerconish audience has its total way. (I wonder how many of these do-gooders will pull rank and end up cutting in line? My guess is quite a few.)

I like Trump’s idea best ... but maybe setting aside a few million doses for the rest of the world ... and even then there will be huge domestic allocation problems.

Last thought: if China. Russia and other countries have vaccines first, how much of the rest of the world have they committed to vaccinating?

Afterthought: Given an American vaccine ... if we allocate a few million doses to the rest of the world, perhaps we should specify that they be given only to front-line workers. (Maybe get WHO to insure that it happens this way? ... just kidding.)

Stubborn Mule

Donald J. Trump is a very stubborn man. It was likely this mulishness as a child that caused his parents to ship him off to military school for discipline. Yes, at military school, he acquired discipline but he was still obstinate ... because it served hm well there. He left the New York Military Acadamy as its top officer.

Then, against his father's advice, he went into the construction business in Manhattan, the toughest venue for builders. I suspect that again his bullheadedness also served him well ... along with his deal making and attention to detail. I also suspect most of his opponents eventually gave in to his stubbornness and let him have his way. This led to fame, wealth, two divorces and, eventually, the presidency.

Now, as president, Trump is exhibiting much more spine than most of his predecessors. He has run into other mules who imagine that they are his parents ... John McCain, Jim Comey, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck  Schumer, Bob Mueller, Bernie Sanders, etc., Jim Acosta and much of the rest of the national media. And, on the international front, there are other rockheads ... Putin, Xi, Erdogan, Merkel, Kim, etc. So, Trump's metal is being severely and constantly tested at all levels. And those who support him in these contests are a sparse legion. He is being tested as never before.

But he has already won a few shrirmishes ... tax cuts,  new NAFTA, regulatory reform, NATO reform, economic growth, monetary policy, global warming policy, economic growth, etc. Yet his detractors are still on the offensive. Their silliness over border security is a perfect example. His opposition on this issue is purely political and unAmerican ... and cannot help his opponents long term (after the shutdown is forgotten).

Most of Trump's critics want him to relent on many of his policies. However, his policies are patriotic and against the myriad special interests in America. He is clearly a populist and a nationalist -- winning strategies as witnessed by how some of his 2020 opponents are beginning to shade their platforms in his direction.

All we can hope is that he keeps his spine for the next two years. If he does, despite being a mule, he will continue winning with the majority of his countrymen.

Alpha Male

There s almost always is an alpha dog in every pack ... except during periods of mortality  changeover.  Whether this is a fact of nature or a gratuitous event, ti's so. If, due to circumstances, some societal construct does not have an alpha animal, the life of this construct is threatened. Ergo, alpha animals are essential in moving societies forward.

How do animals become alphas? Generally through continued combat. Their "toxic masculinity" continually challenges the other males in the troop to battles to assert their dominance. Some of these fights are cakewalks ... some can turn deadly. But, in the end, the alpha male must keep winning to control the other animals and maintain breeding rights with many, if not all of the pack's fecund females.

And since humans are animals ... so it is with humans -- CEOs, prosecutors, governors, popes, mayors, cops, dons, team coaches, presidents -- there is almost always an alpha position leading such  human societal constructs. And some of these aloha males are female -- Thatcher, Merkel, Meir. These alphas roles are seldom the result of physical encounters anymore. They are often elected positions and have traditionally been male although this requirement is rapidly changing.

Strangely enough, the president isn't always the  alpha dog in any administration. One could argue the Henry Kissinger was Nixon!s alpha male and Valarie Jarrett was Obama's. There is little doubt that Trump is our alpha dog now ... although it seems that the entire world is vying to oust him. Actually, he seems to enjoy these contests ... which is driving most never-Trumpers bonkers.
