Rifle Club

When I was but a lad ... going to George Washington High School in Alexandria,VA in the early 1950s, our school had a rifle club ... and a rifle range in the high school basement. Gasp! How could this be? Didn’t the students shoot each other or turn into terrorists?

No, they learned gun safety, how to handle and clean weapons ... and marksmanship ... all Second Amendment qualities we used to cherish. And maybe helpful to those classmates who ended up in Vietnam.

Now, if we are unlucky enough to enter into another war, I doubt if we will be able to defend ourselves quite as well. Unless, of course, such conflicts are virtual ... and on an iPad.

Pooh-Pooh

Gun grabbers pooh-pooh the notion that our Second Amendment was designed to prevent the growth of a repressive central government which would then deny us our other basic Constitutional freedoms.

Please try to convince the protesters in Hong Kong, Caracas and Tehran that such tyranny can never occur there even though they are not allowed any effective defense.

Gun Grabbers

If you are for repealing the US Second Amendment, a Harvard study has revealed that the more (legal?) guns a country has, the lower is its crime rate ... see: Beliefnet Study.

Fake news! This can’t be true!

The Solution

The latest mass shooting in Midland and Odessa, Texas pulls the fresh scab off of the issue of guns and what needs to be done to stop such insanity. There are many sure-fie solutions (intended pun) that are proposed: complete background checks, limiting ammunition clips, banning “assault” rifles, restricting violent computer games, “red flag” laws, social media screenings, more “open carry” laws, compulsory gun buybacks, even repealing the Second Amendment ...some of these suggestions having already been tried and failed ... or been politically unpalatable. Most every politician has a “simple solution.”

But there is only one possible simple solution to this social scourge — and that is there is no simple solution. Unfortunately, like many manias of past times, this one will likely only go away with time. At some point ... possibly years hence ... we will look back and realize that these mass shootings have gone away. Why this has happened we will only learn by understanding how our society had evolved in the interim. I will not suggest what this will be ... because I do not know what it will be ... nor do you.

My only hope is that this solution is a change in our society and not an infringement of our freedoms.

The Greater Evil

The recent Walmart shooter is another evil monster ... and it appears he was inspired to his evil act by the wave of illegal immigrants streaming across our southern border (why he chose El Paso, Texas). And President Trump is fighting to stop this same invasion of (mostly) Hispanics. Therefore, using knee-jerk logic, President Trump is responsible for the grisly death of many innocent back-to-school shoppers yesterday ... no matter what their ethnic background.

This is the media narrative that a great many Americans ... and probably all the Democrat candidates for president will adopt to bludgeon Trump into supporting some form of additional controls on guns in America. (Not something that the shooter had apparently thought a lot about.)

These calls for greater gun control ... even mass gun confiscations ... are already echoing across the land. I’m sure soon most gun grabbers will be shouting and arm waving about the evils of the Second Amendment and, many of them, calling for its repeal. That’s what happened in New Zealand recently ... and it worked. Now, owning a civilian gun in Kiwi country is a crime.

Yes, I know that 20 died and 26 were injured in this current massacre. And that this was the second mass shooting this week (at the Garlic Festival in Gilroy, CA) where 3 died and 15 were wounded. And in both incidents, the nut-job shooters used semi-automatic rifles that had been acquired under current gun regulations. Therefore, we need more regulations ... even mass gun confiscations. Bad idea.

I don’t know why these mostly young men decide that killing lots of people is fun sport. I don’t think anyone really does. But I do know that, like all such evil madness (remember the Wild West?), things will eventually return to sanity ... at which point, if we have chosen the New Zealand solution, we will have performed an evil act that dwarfs what we have recently witnessed. Killing the Second Amendment ... or even crippling it ... will make our nation vulnerable to horrors unimagined. And, assuredly, they will eventually come galloping in  ... on stallions of oppressive malevolence.

Dear reader, I guess I will never understand how liberals can say that such a totalitarian situation will never happen here ... yet then avow that Trump is a crypto-Nazi ... I scratch my head ...

Conundrum

Which side is more guilty for the slaughter of our school children ... those who are resisting the dilution of our Second Amendment rights ... or those who are resisting placing armed sevurity guards in our schools?

Punching Back

Hillary Clinton called many of us "irredeemable deplorables" and, I'm sure, a lot worse in private. Now the right, taking a hint from Trump, is punching back. The Mostly Cajun blog has reprinted a series of epithets for the gun grabbers ... some coming close but, in general, a little harsh ... see: Mostly Cajun Quotes. (My favorite is "inbred college professors.") If you qualify as someone who wants to repeal the Second Amendment, like Justice Stevens, David Hogg and CNN, peruse these slurs to see how Middle America views you. They also don't quite match the invective spewed last weekend by For Our Lives "student" marchers toward the NRA but they come close. Take your pick and enjoy! Turn around is fair play.

Glockophobia

A Glock handgun

"Only criminals, dictators and Democrats fear armed citizens" -- Mostly Cajun blog

A gun is not just an equalizing weapon between physically weaker persons and ones who would do them harm ... but an armed citizenry also keeps its government from oppressing its people. Those who pooh-pooh this latter possibility are ironically usually the same ones who claim that Trump wants to become a despot. Such thwarting of possible tyranny was the genius of our founding fathers when they penned our Second Amendment ... a right only subservient to that of freedom of speech in the FirstAmendment to our prescient Constitution.

This freedom understanding is built into the DNA of most Americans and those trying to annul this right need to rethink their Glockophobia.

School Shootings

The rash of school shooting of late and, in particular, the recent slaughter in Florida have everyone searching for a solution to this madness. The knee-jerk answer centers around guns and ammunition control. But this seems impractical given our American culture of guns. However, there is another common element that has been growing since 2007 along with the increase in gun and other forms of mayhem. And that is social media -- Facebook, Twitter,Yahoo chat rooms, Instagram, reddit, etc.

It would seem that if we made everyone get a license to use such social media ... and if there were a nation registry of such users and those who should be barred from using them ... and if there were a 30-day waiting period for new users to join such technologies ... and if we could ban any social media that had a scary name or appearance ... then we might begin to control this scourge of school violence.

Obviously, the above was partially tongue in cheek. But there really should be something we can do. It seems everyone was predicting that this nutjob in Florida might some day snap ... and he did. They knew this threat without even a background check. Why couldn't the authorities have taken action ahead of this slaughter ... as soon as he had threatened others? Confiscate his guns and ammunition? Closely monitor him and his social media postings? Even place him in protective custody? Maybe we should even stop sensationalizing these incidents in the national media to discourage copycats?

We are civilized. Let us find a civilized solution other than repealing the Second Amendment.

Relativity

No, this blog entry has nothing to do with Einstein. It is about comparing our presidential politicians on the important issues. For instance, Donald Trump wants to build a wall on the Mexican border to stop the hoards of illegals from entering the United States ... whereas Hellery Clinton has been advocating for "open borders," with little or no restriction on who, how, when or where immigrants enter the United States. And since a huge proportion of recent immigrants end up receiving public assistance, to me, this is a recipe for "The Decline and Fall of the American Empire." Yes, and a disproportionate percentage of these illegals end up committing other crimes ... please peruse: The Center for Immigration Studies ... another good reason for enforcing current immigration laws.

Like most Americans, both Hellery and The Donald are "free traders", but Trump believes that the devil is in the details. Pacts like TPP and NAFTA give up too much U.S. sovereignty and economic leverage according to Trump and need to be renegotiated. Whereas Hellery thinks that these trade agreements are just fine ... even though the evidence shows that NAFTA has decimated U.S. manufacturing. Yes, the lefties say that automation is the chief reason for the decline in what was once U.S. manufacturing employment levels. If that be the case, why then relocate factories off shore since the labor content is so low anyway? This does nothing but cause our balance of payments to sink further into the red.

The Democrats and Hellery are hell bent, every time there is a terrorist attack at home, in blaming the gun if there is one involved. The terrorist's culpability is somehow secondary. If the weapon of choice is not a gun ... say a pressure cooker or a box cutter ... then lefties bend over backwards to find some other reason for this terror other than the Religion of Peace. Donald Trump however brags that he has a license to carry a firearm and often does. He promises that he will be a staunch defender of the Second Amendment ... whereas Hellery will appoint new justices of the Supreme Court who will surely gut this precious American civil right. Trump also recognizes that Islam is the common denominator in most of this terror and wants stricter vetting of immigrants from Muslim nations where such terror is rampart. Hellery wants to import tens of thousands more of these potential "Allahu Akbar" miscreants.

Dear reader, this is enough relativity for today. Trust me, I will entertain you with more in the not too distant future.

Abetting ISIS

Recruitment for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is helped by:

- the Guantanamo Prison for foreign combatants

- using the terms "jihadi" or "radical Islam"

- stronger vetting of Muslim immigrants

- American bombing of the ISIS oil infrastructure

 - the Second Amendment of our Constitution

- climate change ... aka, global warming

- Israel's retaliation toward Palistanian stabbers

- investigating certain American mosques

- tighter airline screenings

-  the printing of the Koran on cheap paper

- Donald Trump's hairdo

- increased pricing of Girl Scout cookies

So sayeth Obummer and the rest of the Democrats.

Our Drug Scourge

Deaths from drug overdoses in the United States are far outpacing those from guns or auto accidents ... see: Breitbart Article. Isn't it interesting that President Obama is only obsessed with one of these societal scourges ... firearms ... which are protected by the Second Amendment of our Constitution ... and skipping illicit drug abuse... which isn't.

I could be wrong but I don't recall his highness ever focusing his steely gaze on our devastating and growing drug problems. Could this be because he himself once was also a major enjoyer of such illegal pharmaceuticals? Matter of fact, this administration is now hell-bent on releasing 6,000 three-time drug crime losers from prison ... I suspect this is politically motivated ... and a move that we might all come to regret ... see: New York Times Article. (And, as it turns out, the vast majority of these "drug user" prisoners were often violent drug dealers who plea-bargained down their sentences.)

How come our president so very often seems to be ignoring harsh realities and leading us, Pied Piper like, to remedy issues which are only high on his own political agenda? Is he so misguided and ideological that he can't emphasize our country's real scourges?

Paper Shredder

Not only has Congress lost the ability to control the U.S. borders with Emperor Obama's blanket amnesty of some 5 million illegal immigrants ... it has also lost the leverage to legislate what happens with the Internet with today's decision of the Federal Communication Commission effectively to nationalized this popular technology  ... see: MSN Story ... and, most disturbingly, it apparently has also lost its precious power of the purse. Obama's Treasury Department has recently permitted the spending of three billion dollars that was not authorized by any Congressional appropriation to compensate favored health insurers under Obamacare ... see: Washington Examiner Article.

Clearly this administration's gradual usurpation of the powers granted to Congress by our Constitution is illegal and purposeful  ... particularly since there has been very little public push-back against all these mounting autocratic outrages. Apparently the American public is too consumed with bread and circus ... and the melange of media distractions that this administrations mixes up on a daily basis.

However, what is most frightening is that the pace of these Constitutional abuses is clearly escalating in these last two years of Potentate Obama's administration ... if it can't nullify the guns of the Second Amendment, it just outlaws the bullets ... see: Washington Examiner Story ... if it can't stop Iran from getting atomic weaponry, it might be OK to delay it for a few more months ... or even, what good is NATO anyway if we have to protect Poland? The question then becomes ... how can these abusive power grabs be stopped ... or, for that matter, do we have the stomach even to attempt such nullifications? The media is too embarrassed by its support of this despot  ... the courts are too slow ... Congress is too worried about charges of racism ... and the American public is too obsessed with Bruce Jenner's transmogrification and Joe Biden's transgressions.

Maybe Bibi Netanyahu might have a shot of waking us up with his talk in front of Congress next week? Nah, it will just be downplayed by the media as sour grapes.
