Media Wars

Why all the social turmoil of late? Obviously there is a holy war taking place between the left and the right ... highlighted by the media excesses. The left has the broadcast news, some cable channels, most of the print media and a good internet representation. The right has a few cable channels, talk radio and a slice of the internet that the Masters of the Universe allow then to enjoy. Does this seem like a fair fight ... particularly since our education, entertainment and sports systems are also players on the left?

Kind reader, is it possible that this turmoil is a result of this Teutonic shift in how the people are staying informed? No longer do they shuffle out front to pick up their morning newspaper. Instead they go on the internet to watch what actually happened yesterday. They are less and less using someone else, like Walter Cronkite, to tell them “that’s the way it is.” And this is because slowly the realization is spreading that there are other ways that it is.

And so what happens? The left media in particular, seeing their influence waning, become even more strident and biased in their reporting ... trying to hold onto their revenue streams by corralling viewership and readership ... and doing a credible, albeit ultimately losing job.

Why ultimately losing? Simple, kind reader, they too often are not being honest with the American people. All it took was an orange-haired president continually pointing out “fake news” for this realization to begin to sink in. When hoaxes turn out to be hoaxes the scales begin to fall from some perceptive eyes.

The right has not won yet ... but right is right...  and eventually the media, which most closely reports the facts, will win.

For sure, the truth will out.

The beauty of the Internet is that one can always find a reference to support one’s position ... no matter how cuckoo-pie it is.

Your initial reaction to a news story is that which the reporters and editors wanted you to have ... and is probably misdirected. Good reason to seek out multiple sources before you can uncover the truth ... something that the internet allows you to do ... a happy plus to this technological cesspool.

(Of course, Google does like to lead you by the nose to those internet sites that it wants you to see.)

Read the establishment media (you know the ones). Watch CNN, NBC, MSCDC, CBS, ad the rest of these liberal outlets. Follow the Trump haters on the Internet. It becomes clearer and clearer that, in the midst of this Wuhan pandemic, the nitpicking liberal media are not part of the solution to this crisis ... they are a major part of the problem.

Discord

We are living in an age of discord. Everyone is at someone else’s throat. Why may this be true? I have a suggestion — the new media — the internet and social media. I realize that this is an easy answer for no other reason than these are coincident events. But one has to delve deeper.

The internet and social media have broken the lock that the old media had on information flows. Now, one can be one’s own reporter ... for better of worse ... and realize what these previous intermediaries did to shape our opinions ... and we resent it ... and them.

Through disintermediation you have become free to accept or reject the hundreds of “facts” that flow electronically onto your life. There no longer is an arbiter of truth other than yourself. You have been freed of the old groupthink ... only to be captured by one of many new ones.

Two absolutely opposing views can be backed by a myriad of supporting data that are, in turn, backed by the assurances of other internet trolls, media pundits and “famous” people ... famous because they are not shy about offering their brain droppings. (I include myself in this club.)

So, in the end, there are two positions that are diametrically opposite ...  and both can be justified to a fair-thee-well. A certain recipe for continued discord.

Anonymity

One could make the case, as I will try to here, that social media has created our current caustic social climate. But it is not just the media that is the message, it is that a great deal of this discourse is anonymous. Thus, people can and do say vile things without the chance of recourse.

I, against my wife’s wishes, always use my full name when posting a blog ... or commenting on  another’s. Yes, I leave myself open to retaliation, but I strongly believe that, if I say something, I should be willing to stand behind it. I refuse to be a faceless Internet troll ... like many too many others.

Much of the dangerous and hateful conduct that takes place on the Internet or Dark Web exists behind a wall of pseudonyms or that annoying “Anonymous.” I even believe that many of the problems on our social media would disappear if it were decreed that every last bit of interaction could quickly and easily be attributed to a particular person at a particular URL location ... and covering up these matters could have consequences.

Maybe this is one, if even a partial solution, Congress should look at to rein in big tech? It is big tech, after all, that allows ... even encourages ... this anonymity to occur.

But now this right is being seriously jeopardized by the Internet and its connected listening and camera devices ... which can and often do capture everything said and done in a connected room.  The implications of this power in anyone's let alone evil hands is enormous. We should be very afraid.
