First Impressions

You never have a second chance to make a first impression. — Old Adage

The opening round of the impeachment trial goes to the Democrats. They may be liars ... but they are cleaver liars. On the first day they offered a series of amendments to McConnell’s procedural schedule calling for witnesses and documents. And then used their time in support of these amendments to make their opening arguments to the entire case ... during the time when the most Americans would be watching and when the president’s lawyers were not prepared to jump into this fray with their strongest arguments ... nor could they refute the opposition’s half-truths.

So, the Dems, even though they lost the votes on all these amendments, scored a minor victory which, depending on how the rest of the trial goes, may mean that witnesses and documents may have to be allowed in the end. And then, if the Dems can get their witnesses and deny the Republicans theirs, this might damage the president and the Senate Republicans enough to cause some setbacks this coming November. Unlikely, but possible.

Is this the Dem’s hidden agenda for this disruptive political theater?

Martinet

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is power hungry. Dramatically all dressed in mourning black, she has corralled most of her Democrat children into voting for President Trump’s impeachment with only three defections on the Abuse of Power Article and four on the Obstruction of Congress one. No Republican voted for either article. She has won this battle ... at what cost is still to be determined in next fall’s election. But many suspect, including myself, that she has committed political suicide.

Even compounding this Thelma and Louise moment is what this martinet has done next. Normally, the impeachment articles would be sent to the Senate for their part in this Constitutional process, the trial. But Pelosi is holding back on this tradition in hopes of forcing Mitch McConnell to set up the trial to her liking ... such as calling her proscribed witnesses ... see: CNBC Story.

This seems a moment like Captain Queeg’s rant about the stolen strawberries in the book and film, The Caine Mutiny. Speaker Pelosi is trying to control things she is not supposed to be able to control by law and tradition. She has gone full-postal on President Trump and, it would seem, her motives are now being bared to the world. These motives have nothing to do with the Constitution or our founding fathers or her piety ... they are personal. She hates Donald Trump with a white-hot passion for challenging her power ... and will use every ruse and lever of her authority to prevail in this cage match.

Yes, radical feminists and pajama boys, with gusto, will rally to her side in this insanity. But, I suspect that this power grab on Pelosi’s part may well fail. And even with most of the media cheering her on, all Mitch McConnell has to do is wait her out. Time is not on her side ... and a delayed Senate trial puts enormous pressure on those Senate Democrats who are running for President.

Pelosi may yet learn why McConnell is nicknamed “The Turtle.”

The Senate Trial

President Donald J. Trump will shortly be impeached in the House ... and early next year he will be tried in the Senate. There are really only two plausible scenarios for this Senate trial’

1)  Open all the windows, call all the relevant witnesses and air all the attempted cabal dirty linen in front of the American people on live television. This is the type of trial that Trump is vehemently requesting.

2) Follow possible Mitch McConnell’s lead and short-circuit everything to keep things quick, terse and perfunctory ... with no real intention to deal with all the issues surrounding the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, the Mueller Report, the involvement of foreign intelligence agencies and the whole Ukraine brouhaha.

Now, both options will lead to Trump’s exoneration ... but my suspicion is that the second scenario will be what transpires. And the obvious question is why?

Kind reader, if this prediction does come true, it will likely be because of Ukraine and its history of corruption and payoffs. We now know that the prior Ukraine administrations were putrid to their eyeballs and did buy off Obama’s Ukraine point man, Joe Biden ... by slipping over $3 million of legal graft to his son Hunter.

The question then answers itself —- how many other US politicians benefited from Ukraine grease? And in particular, how many Senators (McConnell? Blumenthal? Feinstein? Graham? Schumer? Leahey? etc.) might be implicated if wide-ranging testimony is allowed in Trump’s Senate trial? (Not an original thought,)

This would be the most obvious reason for trial brevity. And it might also allow the Dems to claim GOP bias to negate the obvious Democrat show hearings in the House. You might even see some Dem Senators voting for quick acquittal for this very reason.

Curious!
