A Disconnect

The straight skinny coming out of the run-up to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland is that five million jobs will be lost in the developed world by 2020 due to the rapid advances being made in artificial intelligence and robotics ... see: Breitbart Story. Compound this with the vast migration of cheap labor and hanger-ons from the third world into the developed world ... this creates an employment disconnect that will be very difficult to reconcile both structurally and politically.

One of the reasons that China has had such dramatic economic growth over the last twenty-five years has been its vast supply of cheap and effective labor. Developed nations, in order to counter this economic advantage, have been (possibly somewhat unconsciously) opening their borders to the underdeveloped nations for immigrant labor ... with the result of reducing their national average personal incomes ... striving for wage and productivity parity with China.

Back to the Davos forecast ... a distinction needs to be made in the forces that are being pointed to for these expected employment reductions. Artificial intelligence mainly is of the mind ... allowing quicker and more effective decisions to be made. This does not necessarily remove the need for labor. (except when these decisions make robots or workers more effective.) It just improves the quality of generic decision making. However, robots in fact do replace physical laborers and thus will reduce actual employment (yet improve productivity.)

If in fact these Davos predictions are accurate, what does it mean for the American economy? Well, clearly the current administration will likely not back off its packing this country with immigrants. And if jobs are indeed drying up, this suggests an even higher percentage of these immigrants receiving government assistance ... with even fewer taxpayers funding these doles for the unemployed ... resulting unfortunately in much higher government deficits. Ouch!

There is only one possible solution in my mind ... start collecting taxes from the robots ...

Cleanliness ...

... is not necessarily next to Godliness. We are living in an age of Purell ... that omnipresent liquid that the Felix Ungers of the world slather on their hands at the drop of a doily. (There are even grocery stores that now offer an equivalent way of sanitizing your shopping cart.) Now in Switzerland it has been discovered why the holes in Swiss cheese have been disappearing ... things have gotten too clean in the dairy barns there. It was the tiny specks of hay dust that were causing those characteristic vacuoles in Gruyere cheese ...  see: ENews Story ... and modern sanitation methods had eliminated this good contaminant.

Along these same lines, many years ago, on a swing through Napa valley, a few of us stopped at the Grgich Hills winery (the cru of the first American white wine to win a gold medal at a French wine fair.) Luckily, old man Grgich was there and gave us a personal tour ... during which he spilled the secret of making superior wine ... "Don't keep things too clean," he whispered.

It is also believed that exposing children to many of the microbes of life builds up their immunities ... rater than the opposite effect. So, you helicopter parents who never knowingly expose your chillins to any germs ... you may be causing them more harm than good ...

Humble Pie

The P5 +1 Iran nuclear-reduction talks in Lausanne, Switzerland have taken on the tone of an Indiana state legislative cave-in as all the other players have left this swank venue except Iran, England and John Kerry searching the distant horizon and crooning "Chloe" ... see: Breitbart Article. It must be quite lonely at that big conference table without those other negotiators ... Iran smiling slyly ... and the other two ... scowling behind spread-palm face-covers. But there is some solace ... it just means there is more Beluga caviar and Dom Perignon for the remaining three.

But how much humble pie can "Christmas in Cambodia" Kerry also eat before he understands how he is sullying himself and his country? I do suppose that he is on a short leash from his links-obsessed boss who never seems to feel any pressure for his screw-ups ... just as long as he can off-load them on dweebs such as Hanoi John.

Or blame the Republicans and George Bush ...

A Simple Solution

The Iranian nuclear talks have still not concluded with an agreement ... or an framework of an agreement ... or a framework of an understanding ... or even just a terse press release ... see: Yahoo News Story. Therefore may I offer a simple solution to this stalemate?

Just move the proceedings from the five-star Beau-Rivage Palace Hotel in Lausanne, Switzerland (see: Beau-Rivage-Palace-Lausanne) to the half-star Red Roof Inn in Paterson, New Jersey (catered by Pizza Hut). I think this would speed things up a tad.

On Pins and Needles

The nuclear capability reduction talks going on between the "six world powers" and Iran have had the world on pins and needles for weeks ... hoping for some favorable results. I, however, have concluded long ago that these talks are a tedious farce. The current round of negotiations has been so convoluted that one can only conclude that Iran has no intention to arrive at any result except extending negotiations again and again and again. Read the tortured language of the reporting on this Lausanne, Switzerland kabuki dance ... see: AP Reporting. What the hell is the difference between a "framework agreement" and a "framework understanding?" This is how downright inane these discussions have gotten ...

Now, exactly how many Al -Malaa'ikah (Muslim angels) can dance on the head of a pin ... or needle for that matter?

Demographics

I’ve only studied a bit of econometrics, but I know enough of it to know that most long-term economic growth has its real basis in demographic expansion.  Yes, a country like Russia can experience a spurt of economic growth, based on new energy discoveries, while at the same time showing negative population growth.  And there are other abnormal instances of explosive population growth which does not translate into strong economic numbers … such as currently being experienced in the Gaza Strip.  (This situation seems particularly driven by an aberrant political objectives and not natural economics.)

But for liberals to espouse zero or negative population growth strikes me as national suicide … see: Breitbart Story.  One needs only fly across the United States a view the vast tracks of nothingness to realize that, were this country to reach the population density just in the Rockies, of say Switzerland, we could support many times more people than currently.  And this would in turn drive economic expansion and dynamic/dramatic technical developments.  Let us have faith in what has previously worked.  The most important thing that our political leaders should strive for is that this expanding population stay a melting pot and not become a Cobb salad … and focus on fulfilling more important objectives than applauding Beyonce’s hip wiggling or choosing the brackets for March Madness.

Race to the Bottom

The world is taking a dangerous and rocky path to universal monetary collapse.  Japan is now following the United States's Federal Reserve in devaluing its currency ... in order to give its economy a shot in the arm, see: CNBC Story.  The U.S. Fed’s Chairman, Ben Bernanke, has been pushing “quantitative easing” (QE) for the last three years in order to sop up all the debt that this country is forced to issue to cover it’s fire-hose federal spending … to the point where it has expanded our money supply (and its balance sheet) by $3 trillion.  And, in order to keep this crushing debt burden from sinking things further, it has kept generic interest rates artificially low with its banking muscle.  It has been able to run the monetary printing presses night and day without setting off crushing inflation because our economy is still so weak …  reflected in our poor employment and wage-increase statistics.

But one economic “benefit” of this monetary expansion is a weak U.S. dollar which tends to help export markets and crimp importers.  Given how poor the U.S. balance of payments actually is … image what a disaster it would be without the Fed’s dollar deflationary measures?  However, our trading partners are losing patience with us and, as indicated in the referenced article, are now mimicking Bernanke’s strategy.  The European Central Bank (ECB), China, Great Britain, Japan, and even Switzerland (for heaven’s sake) are falling over one another to try to devalue their currencies with their own QEs.  A U.S. Dollar slide begets a Chinese Yuan slide which begets an Euro slide which begets a Japanese Yen slide which begets a British Pound slide which begets a Swiss Pound slide.  This is all a very dangerous race to the bottom.

How will this end?  With all this quantitative easing, the world will be, in short order, awash in money.  The balance sheets of the central banks will have reached unsustainable levels … probably the ECB first; and the only way out will be for them to let the dogs out … allow inflation to reduce the carrying-cost pain of their excessive debts.  And, this time, run-away inflation will not be as localized as it was in Germany in the 1920s.  It will be world-wide and will engender political upheavals that are likely to be quite painful.  (At this point Bernanke will not look quite so angelic.)  So be forewarned and be prepared … own real hard assets (not cash) and owe lots of money … and live in an area of relative political sanity.
