Land Mines

Ex-President Obama left quite a number of land mines for his successor, Trump, to try to dance around:

- North Korea's missiles and atomic weaponry threats

- Iran on a clear path to nuclear weapons

- Poor economic and personal income growth

- Worldwide Jihadi terrorism

- China's South China Sea expansionism

- Immigration quagmire ... caused by lax enforcement

- Failed Muslim states: Libya, Somalia, Afghanistan,Yemen

- Hollowed-out U.S. national defense forces

- Over-regulation

- Poor relations with Israel

- Cybersecurity threats from around the world

- Unsustainable welfare/government transfer programs

- Incomplete ISIS and Syrian conflict resolutions

- Burdensome fiscal deficits and deadly national debt levels

- Huge international trade/balance of payments imbalances

- Obamacare in extremis

- Deteriorating race relations

- Crumbling national infrastructure

- National security and political leak torrents

- Increasing crime rates in many of our cities

But to Obama's credit, we were adored by most Western European leaders ... particularly due to his stance on global warming.

Afterward: There are only three reasons why Obama would have left all these problems for his follow-on ... indifference, incompetence ot by design. Historians will sort this all out, but my vote goes to the last choice.

It Figures ...

How did the Manchester, England bomber, Salman Abedt, fund his bomb making and travels to Libya and Syria for jahadi training? Why, for one, by using British government student loans for classes he never attended. Easy peasy. In two years, this Muslim terrorist was lent over 14,000 pounds (about $18,000) from the British government for university studies with no follow-up as to whether he was actually attending class ... See: Powerline Blog. He also was apparently on the government welfare dole ... housing (he actually had three flats), food and all the other generous benefits offered to British deadbeats.

It figures ... How many other British (and American) children killers are also funding their mischief with government funds?

The Way That He Said It

Michael Hayden, former NSA and CIA Director and a man whom I admire greatly, was on TV this morning and he was asked if he agreed with Donald Trump when he said multiple times that Obummer created ISIS. Hayden replied, to the surprise of the questioner, that yes Obummer's premature departure from Iraq, his "red line" back-down with Syria, and his Libyan fiasco ... all helped to spawn ISIS out of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. However, he did say that the way Trump communicated this fact was impolitic to say the least and he was not happy with it.

General Hayden was then asked about his recent statement, along with 49 other former intelligence officers, that he would not be voting for Trump ... see: VOA News Story. His response was also encouraging ... that he would not be voting for Clinton either. He also added that neither he nor necessarily the 49 other signers were Republicans. Yes, most served in Republican administrations, but that doesn't mean that they are political. He claimed that he has tried to be apolitical ... I think for good reason.

How do I feel about Trump's way of communicating? Yes, he is often immature and impolitic at his rallies ... and I wish he was more like Hayden. However, he is being heard by vast swaths of the voting public who need these simple messages that speak directly and plainly to them. Trump will never be William Buckley or David Brooks at the podium. But, then again, he will never be nuanced to the point of being taken both ways ... like most politicians. And, in some respects, this is his strength ... perhaps his only strength ... possibly why he is so resistant to changing his approach. For this straight talk, no matter the outcome in November, one must give him credit.

He clearly  will live or die as a populist.

Success!

When Obummer first took office, Rush Limbaugh issued that famous quote, "I hope he fails." Well, unfortunately, Rush was wrong ... and Obummer, over seven years, has experienced fairly wide-ranging successes with his objectives ... many, I am sure, we will hear about this Tuesday night.

He has pulled our troops out of Iraq. He has orchestrated a surge of troops in Afghanistan, "the good war." He has gotten his health care reform, Obamacare, passed and now implemented. He has opened our borders to many tens of thousands of "dreamers," or young illegal Mexican and Central American immigrants. He has also admitted tens of thousand of legal Muslim immigrants. Through the Muslim Brotherhood, he helped spawn the Arab Spring and all the changes it caused in the Middle East. He overthrew the Kadaffi government in Libya. ዕብያ።With the generous help of the Federal Reserve Bank , he has reduced the national unemployment rate to 5 %. He has drawn attention to possibly illegal police shootings throughout the country.  He has waged a relentless war on domestic "assault weapons." He has negotiated a nuclear limitation agreement with Iran. At the Paris Climate Conference he has focused world attention on global warming. He has gone a long way toward closing the Guantanamo Bay prison. He has championed a new free-trade pact with the Far East. He has gotten his most recent $1.1 trillion omnibus budget passed ... funding most of his residual objectives.

All this while enjoying himself immensely and playing hundreds of rounds of golf all around the United States.

Of course many of these successes have also had a dark side ... but we will leave them for another time.

Poor Richard

Much as the liberal left hates Dick Cheney, it seems that this man did an awful lot to keep the United States safe after 9/11 and during Bush 43's remaining term of office. The current misbehavers in the Middle East: Syria, Turkey, Iran, Yemen and Libya, all were then more stable and docile than they are today ... much in reaction to what they then saw happening in Iraq.

Yes, Cheney talked tough and intimidated people and countries ... perhaps the reason he was so resented and demagogued. But our current administration's strategy of talking soft and carrying a little stick is clearly not working. In fact the terrorist threat level we face today is, according to our intelligence agency heads, greater today than it was going into 9/11. Yet, Barack's and Hillary's only obvious enemies these days are the Republicans.

It also seems to this observer that Donald Trump's popularity today derives much from the similarity of his message to the former vice president's ... but with far less intellect, principles, and international acumen. Will Dick Cheney's contributions to our nation's safety ever be recognized? I think they will ... but probably not for a number of years ... when historians can look at things in a more sober light.  In the meantime, I think it quite likely that America will elect a Dick Cheney clone for president in 2016 ... or at the very least for vice president.

Poor Richard Cheney ... a true American hero.

Am I Wrong?

According to Hillary Clinton's sworn testimony at last week's Benghazi hearings, Chris Stevens did not have her private e-mail address so that he might send a plea for extra security directly to her. However, it was also revealed during her testimony that Sid Blumenthal had sent Hillary e-mails to this same address that contained certain intelligence on Libya that Hillary then forwarded to Chris Stevens for comment. How in Lucifer's name could Chris Stevens reply with any comments to Hillary if he didn't have her return private e-mail address?

We all know how e-mail systems work. Apparently, Hillary Clinton has perjured herself again for the umpteenth time.

Am I wrong?

Mouthpieces

In a way I pity the poor Obama administration's mouthpieces ... for they clearly are living under rigid constraints about what they can and cannot say ... even when they are constantly beaten up in the process. Josh Earnest, the administration's press secretary (and his predecessor, that common streetwalker, Jay Carney), Bernadette Meehan, the National Security Council spokeswoman, the State Department's Spox, Marie Harf (you know, the blond bomb-shell wannabe) ...  and even some of the Defense Department shills.  All of them must embrace the tortured and often inane language that is obviously imposed from above when they are issuing statements about the latest ISIS atrocities ... saying 21 Egyptian citizens instead of 21 Coptic Christians were beheaded in Libya ...required to say that Islam is a religion of peace ... and pointing to the gang affiliation of the latest Copenhagen gunman and not his Muslim motivations.

Can we say that these language constraints come directly from the president? It is not a stretch to so conclude ... since he himself goes to remarkable lengths to call the shooting at a Kosher deli in Paris "random" ... to say that ISIS is not Islamic ... and will only use the term "radical extremism" when we all know the source of 99.9% this blood-lust is some of the teachings of Mohammad.

The World Map

I've just coined a new word, "neo-iso." Neo-iso stands for neo-isolationism (or ist) … apparently this is the Obama administration’s new and evolving foreign policy.  Ever since he drew and then erased the red line in Syria, President Obama has become less interested in insinuating the United States into foreign adventures. This inward-turning policy toward world conflicts could perhaps reflect our country’s legacy distaste for our role in resolving international disputes. But I am somewhat doubtful that, in the majority, the American people have become dyed-in-the-wool neo-isos.

Clearly President Obama’s previous more belligerent stances in Afghanistan and Libya may have been … as former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates suggested in his recent book … merely for political purposes.  But realizing that these blunted excursions onto the world’s battlefields brought him little leadership purchase or respect from those world political A-listers whose adoration he craves, I believe that our "leader of the free world" has now opted for the new pre-qualifier -- “former.”

Into this vacuum created by this floundering disinterest on the United States’ part has stepped the wanna-be despots of the world … Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and Venezuela.  They see their opportunity and are seizing it … and we have, I am afraid, just begun to see the mischief that they can create for the free-world. This expansionist muscle-flexing on their parts is likely to last for decades.

If free Europe and Japan do not step up to counter this power eschewing on the United States’ part, I’m afraid that the map of the world may need considerable revisions before our fearless leader leaves office in 2017.  Then, the rebuilding of American hegemony will not occur overnight … if our next President can accomplish it  … or even if he/she so chooses.

For the strategic high ground, once surrendered, is very costly to retake. And it is very doubtful whether China or others would front us the funds for such an effort ... or, if not, whether our welfare state could be pared back enough in order to pay for our return to a position of military dominance.

Yes, Obama has clearly fulfilled his campaign promise “to fundamentally change America.”  However, I believe that our voters might have been better off to have asked for a few more specifics.

Riots

In Kiev, Ukraine
The streets of the world are alive with protesters … Ukraine, Venezuela, Thailand, Turkey, Brazil, and even Syria … if you consider a revolution to be a form of protesting. To see comments on the whys and wherefores of the first three insurrections see: CNN Update. And one can easily add to these current uprisings … past riots in Egypt, Iran, Libya, etc. … all within the past five years.

In Caracas, Venezuela
What do many of these mass altercations have in common?  Mostly they are protesting the autocratic and corrupt nature of their current governments; involve large numbers of young people; are spread through the widespread use of cell phones and social media; and have mostly been conveniently ignored by the Obama administration (except for the initial riots in Egypt when we came out in support of the Muslim Brotherhood.)

This U.S. foreign policy posture toward these uprisings … mostly one of respecting the existing government … is possibly the most egregious failing of our State Department over the last century. Had we, during Obama’s reign, assumed a foreign policy position that it was in our national interest to see the movement of other nations’ governments away from tyranny, radicalism and theocracy … toward moderation, modernity, and secularism … we could have easily taken sides in these conflagrations and used our moral suasion to influence outcomes.

And, I’m reasonably sure that the world would be a lot better off today.

Bull in a China Shop

I once was a fan of Colin Powell.  But his sycophantic utterances regarding Barack Obama has caused me pause. Yet the Powell Doctrine, “If you break it, you own it” still has profound meaning … meaning that George W. Bush seemed to understand and embrace in his attempt to stabilize Iraq before he left office.  However this current administration appears to have no such compunctions … a failing that General Powell has yet to noticed.

President Obama and our then Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, have left Libya in ruins and chaos … see: The UK Independent Story. Our President’s inattention to Iraq has caused much of what was accomplished there to be backsliding into sectarian warfare.   Obama also promised a “surge” in Afghanistan to try to fix things ala Bush 43 … only to make things worse with his concurrent statement about our departure date … and his political and shameful gutting of our rules of engagement (see: Sitting on Our Hands).  And then there was Egypt … a self correcting disaster despite all of Obama’s and Clinton’s attempts to the contrary.

Now we have shifted our snorting “foreign policy” to SyriaEl toro!

Far Fetched

There is a shocking account circulating among the conservative media that Varerie Jarrett gave the stand-down order during the September 11th last Benghazi attack by radical Muslims … and not the only person who had the real authority to do so, President Obama … see the original story in: The Conservative Report.  This effectively stopped any military rescue efforts to protect our diplomatic staff there … with the sad result that Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans were consequently slaughtered. No one as yet has testified that Obama gave this order ... yet we know that it was given.

If this seems a little far fetched to you, it does to me too … except for one thing.  And that is the plethora of smoke and mirrors that have been constructed by this administration as extraordinary cover-up over the fallout from this attack.  They obviously have something (or things) to hide.  Despite our then Secretary of State’s screeching, “What difference does it make?” …. Madam (former) Secretary Clinton, it indeed does make a difference … particularly if Varerie Jarrett had been acting as our make-believe President.

If you wish to read other accounts of this shocking supposition … each presenting interesting viewpoints and supporting facts read: The Examiner Story and Charles Krauthammer's Comments and Rush Limbaugh's Comments.

Libya

Qadaffi
For a very interesting and well-written analysis by an ex-diplomat regarding Benghazi and Libya… and the Obama/Clinton clumsy involvement therein, I highly recommend that you read the following blog post: The Diplomad.

It is very difficult for me not to be happy that Qadaffi has assumed room temperature … in that he, by proxy, killed 270 people (mostly Americans) in the Lockerbie, Scotland Pan Am bombing (see: Wikipedia Entry).  But then, I guess, international relations are a lot more complicated than my tiny mind can comprehend.  Apparently, that goes double for Hillary and Barack.

The Cover-up

Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) is complaining that he is being denied access to the survivors of the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya on this past September 11th ... in which four Americans died, including our Ambassador (see: Breitbart Story ).  He can’t even get the survivors’s names … or know exactly how many there were.  How can this be?  How can the complete story of what happened in Benghazi come out if our government is managing the news of this event so closely … even to the point of keep the survivors incognito for over three months?  We are obviously violating at least two fundamental rights of these survivors … to be known and to tell what they know?

There is only one easy answer to these questions.  There are things that must have occurred that night in Benghazi that are so embarrassing to this Administration that they need to squash the facts and any access to these facts.  In truth, even Susan Rice’s withdrawal from consideration as Secretary of State is probably part of this cover-up.  If Ambassador Rice were to be closely interrogated about Benghazi as part of her confirmation process, incriminating facts were very likely to have come out … which might open up new avenues of Congressional inquiry … and maybe even investigative reporting (gasp!.)  An insidious quilt of secrecy is being pulled over this Benghazi event which should be anathema to any clear-thinking American.

And, from what we learned about what happened to Nixon during Watergate, it’s not the crime that is so damaging … it is the cover-up.  And, like what happened in the early 1970’s, it may take a few years, but the public will eventually find out the truth.  And, considering the frantic efforts currently being made to thwart this investigation, I think the truth will likely be very devastating.

Tums for the Tummy

Democracy … that was the byword when the United States (read Hillary and Barack) backed the notion of the “Arab Spring” … which so far has brought them nothing but headaches – the four murders in Benghazi, the storming of the U.S.’s Cairo embassy, the Hamas rocket attacks on Israel, the al Qaeda resurgence in Mali, and now Egypt’s President, Mohammed Morsi, assuming the role of a dictator (see: CBS News Story). Yes, there were “democratic” elections in Egypt after Hosni Mubarak was tossed out  … which the Muslim Brotherhood won. But, since then, there has been a steady deterioration of Egypt’s democratic governance and cooperation with the United States … to the point were our President can’t even call Egypt an ally.

Yes, there has been something of a détente recently when Egypt interceded in the Hamas rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza. But any clear-thinking person knows that this will be a short-lived truce. Even Obama’s former Special Envoy to the Mid East, George Mitchell, has said that the U.S. should not be rewarding bad behavior on the part of the extremists.  However, rewarding them we are (by negotiating with and thus recognizing Hamas).  But Hillary Clinton has seized on this moment, I believe, to try to change the subject away from her problems in Libya. And it will take months, if not years, before we know the full extent of what she has promised them in exchange for what I’m sure will be more Morsi duplicity. Hillary clearly does not believe that old adage that “when you lie down with dogs, you end up with fleas” … but rumor has it that Bubba Clinton has just ordered a gross of “Frontline” ampules.

Now the Egyptians are again demonstrating for the freedoms that they thought they were getting when Morsi was elected … but, alas, it is not to be … probably not for many years to come ... if ever. It appears that the one of the world’s oldest civilizations, the Egyptians, have traded a headache for an upset stomach. As part of the deal, could Hillary have promised them a shipload of Tums?

Afterward:  I got the following list of powers that Morsi granted himself from an AP story:

"— All laws and decisions by the president are final, cannot be appealed, overturned or halted by the courts or other bodies. This applies to decisions he has made since taking office in June and any he makes until a new constitution is approved and a new parliament is elected, expected in the spring at the earliest.

— No judicial body can dissolve the upper house of parliament or the assembly writing the new constitution. Both are dominated by the Brotherhood and other Islamists and several cases demanding their disbanding were before the courts, which previously dissolved the lower house of parliament.

— The president can take any steps or measures necessary to prevent threats to "the revolution, the life of the nation or national unity and security" or to the functioning of state institutions.

— A new judiciary body of "protection of the revolution" is created to reopen investigations, prosecutions and trials of former regime officials, including ousted President Hosni Mubarak, for the killing of protesters during last year's uprising. Other police officers accused of killings, however, will not be retried.

— The controversial prosecutor general, a Mubarak appointee seen by many as lax in pursuing former regime figures, was removed from his post."

Does anyone hear the sound of crickets coming from our White House?

Cowed

The unfolding events in Benghazi, Libya on this past September 11th are becoming very disturbing.  It has become abundantly clear that everyone in the administrative chain of command, including the President, knew in real time what was transpiring on that fateful night.  And for almost seven hours nothing was effectively done.  This is 180-degrees against American tradition and against the most basic instincts of human nature.  One can speculate until the cows come home as to why this was the case, but the actions and words of Leon Penetta, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama can only cause one to conclude that the decision was made, at whatever level, that these four American's lives were expendable.  CIA Director, David Petraeus seems to be unwilling to made the scapegoat ... see: Weekly Standard Piece, but the recent revelations of how Hillary and Barack acted whilst standing beside the coffin of his son Tyrone and talking to the father, Charles Woods (see: Another Weekly Standard Piece), suggests to me the utter calculated callousness that these political bovines were trying to use to misdirect blame.

It is inexcusable for how our administration acted and (did not) react to this Benghazi massacre.  Even if more lives were lost as a consequence of an attempt to protect our United States's sovereignty and lives, we still would have acted with honor.  Now we have lost four lives and our honor to boot.  To compound this outrage, the administration then went on to commit an even greater sin ... the cover-up.  For at least two weeks they peddled the fallacy of an anti-Islam YouTube video was the reason for the Benghazi attacks.  I needn't repeat the litany of falsehoods that our administration manufactured to try to excuse this infamy.  But thinking back on this period, it turns my stomach.

George W. Bush was frequently called a "cowboy President." The Obama tag team are not cowboys ... merely cowed.  Unfortunately, we must endure them for at least a while longer.

The Buck Stops Here ... Kinda

Just in time to provide her boss some political cover in tonight's debate, Hillary Clinton now says that it was her responsibility to provide the necessary security to the Benghazi consulate ... kinda.  Although she says that the buck stops with her, she does water down this noble gesture by saying it was her security people who actually made the decision not to respond to the request for more security ... that led to the terrorist attack and murder of our Libyan Ambassador and three other Americans there on September 11th.  See: Michelle Malkin Story ... particularly her hypertext link: delegated the blame.

This seeming noble act on Hillary's part tells me three things:
1) Despite her protestations to the contrary, Hillary Clinton still does have political ambitions regarding who will be the Democrat candidate for the Presidency in 2016.  (But, I would expect, between now and then, she will get a better hairdresser.)
2) She has some doubts as to whether her boss, Barack Obama, will prevail in the current election.  Otherwise Joe Biden would be the natural (if silly) choice to head the Democrat ticket then.
3) That master politician, Bill Clinton, is probably behind this posturing on Hillary's part.  This likely is because he seems to be obsessed with getting back into the White House ... even as the second fiddle.  Perhaps he had left some good cigars hidden in the Oval office?
