A Little More Spine

Got an empty afternoon? May I suggest that you watch the FBI’s Inspector General Horowitz testifying in front of the Senate’s Homeland Security Committee the other day. It’s a long look ... but if you have patience, you will see Horowitz backtrack and equivocate on his previous assertion that there was no political bias involved in Comey’s FISA Court’s applications to spy on the Trump campaign ... see: The Hill Video.

It’s a little tricky to measure exactly how far Horowitz has backtracked, but it seems the FISA Court’s slap-down of the FBI recently has emboldened him of late. Shall we say he has gotten a little more spine?

Crossing the Rubicon

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi waded across the Rubicon today ... announcing that the Democrats will go ahead with a Trump impeachment vote ASAP ... certainly before Christmas. This is a no-turning- back decision ... likely precipitated by Pelosi’s nose counting of the Yes votes by Democrats when the vote is taken ... and maybe by the pending Monday release of the FBI IG report on the validity of the FISA applications in 2016/17.

But there are a number of House Democrats in purple districts with their arms in slings after Pelosi coerced them into a commitment to vote for impeachment. To this observer, Pelosi is betting on a long-shot outcome for this process ... as, if things go as I expect in the Senate trial, as well as what might come out of the IG Horowitz and AG Barr investigations, Pelosi’s majority in the 2021 House might well be in jeopardy.

As Pelosi is wont to say of late, I “pray” so ...

Spooks

Governments need to have spooks ... spies, counter spies, espionage agents and counter espionage  agents. That’s the nature of national security. And because of what these agents are charged to do ... unsavory stuff ... they are generally not Boy Scouts. If they are not nefarious when they are hired, they become nefarious in order to advance their careers.

So we should not be surprised when we find unsavory individuals like Comey, Brennan, Clapper, Strzok, Page, McCabe, etc. inside our intelligence operations. It comes with the territory ... like frogs in a frog pond.

Which is all the more reason why, if these intelligence officials turn rogue and use their powerful wiles and ways against their political adversaries, they should be severely punished. If they are given a pass, because they are spooks, then they effectively become like antibodies attacking their own tissue, they create a very dangerous precedent ... a precedent that might eventually kill their host ... i.e., bring down their country.

All the more reason that the FBI Inspector General Horowitz and Attorney General Barr should not pull their punches in their investigations into the alleged attempted coup by our intelligence community against a sitting president, Donald J. Trump. If our president cannot trust his spooks, it is very spooky!

Trump v. Pelosi

Rep. Jerry Nadler is giving President Trump until Friday to name his witnesses and decide if he will have White House counsel present in the upcoming House Judiciary Committee hearings on impeachment ... see: Nadler Deadline Letters.

This throwing down the gauntlet is meant to call the Republicans bluff on their complaints lodged against what went on in Adam Schiff’s Intelligence Committee Kangaroo Court hearings last week ... and therefore pose a dilemma for the Trump defenders — put forward a strong defense of Trump in the House impeachment phase ... or wait until the Senate trial where defensive actions can’t be voted down by a partisan Democrat majority.

This Trump vs. Pelosi strategizing all gets very complicated on both sides ... in terms of timing relative to the Horowitz IG report on the FISA court abuses ... and the Barr/Durham ongoing criminal investigation into the predicate for the Russian collusion investigation. Chairman Nadler (really Pelosi) has said that his hearing won’t just be on the Ukraine/Burisma matter but also on the warmed-over Russian collusion issue. How’s that for throwing all the balls in the air?

Clearly, if Trump calls witnesses involved in either of these charges, he could be undercutting their impact upon the public with their revelations ... because such revelations would be forthcoming in a hostile environment where they could be blunted by rulings of the chairman or the full committee votings. This would not be the case in a Senate trial. On the other hand, Chairman Nadler has done a rather ineffective job in previous hearings meant to embarrass Trump: Mueller’s report testimony and the Corey Lewaindowski debacle.

There is even a chance that Pelosi is hoping that the Nadler hearings might be a way of backing Trump down so she might quietly kill this whole impeachment thing ... which has not gone as she and Schiff had expected. In any case, I predict that it won’t be a Pelosi win.

But it should be riveting ...
