Sanctions

President Obama has announced a new round of rigorous sanctions against the Russian Federation for its interference in the Ukraine. Even though somewhat vague, this list I am sure includes at the very least the following conscriptions:

-        The West will no longer permit the publication of any bare-chested Putin pictures.

-        Stoli vodka can no longer be sold in any flavored form inside Washington, DC.

-        Russian oligarchs cannot withdraw more than $1 billion per day from U.S. banks.

-        The U.S. intends to boycott the next Russian Winter Olympics, whenever that is.

-        Michelle Obama will no longer accompany Barack to any meetings in Russia.

-        Russian Sevruga caviar can now only be served at the White House.

-        The LA Clippers must play all their 2015 games in Moscow.

That’ll teach them.

50-50

President Obama responded to a question on Saturday at a Brookings Institute forum in Washington saying that he was not naive and that the chances for success in our recent comprehensive nuclear deal with Iran were about 50-50 … see: NY Daily News Story.  What?  In other words, it was a coin toss as to whether we would get Iran to abandon its nuclear weapon(s) ambitions in exchange for our relaxing the sanctions we have imposed on them.  Basically he said that we must capitulate and give diplomacy a chance.

To me these remarks are the very height of naiveté. The sanctions that we had imposed on Iran were clearly having an effect and, instead of increasing the pressure, we have retreated.  This interim deal with Iran is like a bet on a coin toss in which the outcome for heads is a piece of pie and tails results in the torture and slaughter of your entire family.  How can we have such a numbskull as our president?

Very soon, the U.S. Congress is likely to pass a bipartisan measure that, after six months, would re-impose these sanctions if Iran doesn’t live up to this agreement.  And every indication from its current gorilla-dust rhetoric is that Iran won’t.  And then where are we?  We are six month’s closer to war anyway … a war that would prove that diplomacy is not always the right choice over intense international economic pressure.

This Congressional action, in itself, is a bit of a six-month capitulation.  Yet the Obama administration is unhappy with even codifying the very terms that it has offered Iran … and Iran, in turn, has threatened to kill this interim agreement if this Congressional action happens … see: Chicago Tribune Story.

So, if Congress now backs down on this threat, it will be almost as naive as our fearless (fearful?) leader … and Israel will be a coin toss away from an almost-certain Iranian nuclear attack.

Batty

How can so many seemingly-smart people be so blind?  The current John Kerry-brokered deal with Iran, instead of averting war there, pretty much guarantees it. Clearly Iran was suffering greatly from the sanctions that the world had been imposing on them.  So, by cooing like a dove through its hawkish beak, Iran has slipped the noose. President Obama unilaterally relaxed these sanctions and then had Kerry construct a pact that is so loosey-goosey that both sides can claim victory.  Instead of pressing our advantage, we have let Iran keep spinning its tens of thousands of centrifuges ... enriching uranium ... even though this contradicts dozens of U.N. resolutions.

So many of the supposed concessions by Iran in this deal are pure hokum ... see: Free Beacon Story.  With this pact we have just given Iran over $8 billion and six months to further advance its nuclear mischief. If Senators Chuck Schumer and Robert Menendez are against this agreement, one has to question its underpinnings. After six months, when we realize what fools we and the other signers of this deal have been, reimposing sanctions on Iran anything like what we have now will be next to impossible.  And Iran's nuclear weapon(s) will be just months away ... maybe then the scales will fall from our eyes.

Paul Wolfowitz was on the MSNBC Chris Hayes' All In show yesterday and knocked into a cocked hat all of the loose logic being used by the left to trumpet this Iranian deal ... see: MSNBC Video. Basically Wolfowitz parried each of Hayes' arm-waving talking points with crystal-clear logic and conviction. As can be seen Hayes is wearing thick glasses ... I think he may also need a white cane.

Afterthought: To understand the degree of Iran's perfidy and the Obama administration's naivete (at least I hope it is naivete) please peruse this statement of the actual ten terms of this agreement in the Powerline Blog.  Sleep well ...

The Bomb

Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel is warning us and the world that Iran's dovish nuclear overtures are a possible trap ... see: NY Times Story.  This olive branch from the new President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, for opening direct negotiations on its nuclear program  is such a u-turn from its previous hard-line position that I too am quite chary.  The fact that this attempt at detente is occurring just when Obama is back on his heels due to his Syrian policy failures is another reason to be suspicious.  Iran must figure that President Obama might grab at any life preserver during his diplomatic drowning.  I think Iran may well be right ... and using this ruse to get its sanctions lifted would be an added plus.

In fact, I will go even further than Netanyahu, I think this Iranian ploy means that it either has started building a nuclear bomb stockpile ... or, more likely, it already has one or more such weapons.  I think that Israelis are not sleeping too well these days ... nor am I ... nor should you.

Trust

There is now a fourth biggest lie: "Trust us, we have your back."

Until recently, whether the U.S. was willing to admit it, the foreign policy it has exhibited toward Iran was one of "containment" (see: The Atlantic Article and Washington Post Article).  Basically what this policy said to this theist dictatorship was "OK you can get atomic weaponry, but if you use them, there will be hell to pay."  This policy was even overtly stated by our Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, in 2009 when she said that the Middle East could be protected by the U.S.'s nuclear umbrella (see: Financial Times Comments, last paragraph).  Not surprisingly, this policy seems strategically silly and certainly catastrophic when one hears Iran's Ahmadinejad continually rant about his Armageddon ambitions (see: Human Events Article).

Now, Obama, feeling the tug of the upcoming elections and trying to hold onto the usually-reliable Jewish vote, has ask for more time to allow his "sanctions" to work.  Basically, in my opinion, this policy is an attempt to thread the needle between Iran containment and the Jewish-voters fleeing the Democrat ticket in droves.  Now, The Barry has the audacity to claim (apparently out of the other side of his mouth) that the U.S. policy toward Iran is not one of containment (see: Boston Herald Story).  The problem with his current posture is that most people breathing can see that it is opportunistic bluster ... and the President of the United States can't be trusted.

The Prime Minister of Israel, Netanyahu's recently-completed trip to the United States was, to me, his last ditch attempt to get the current administration to abandon our policy of containment and the notion that lily-liver sanctions will cause Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions.  My guess would be that Netanyahu hoped that he might get Obama to agree to crippling sanctions against Iran (closing down all bank transfers, stopping all gasoline imports, arming Iranian rebels, etc.) as the only hope for getting Iran to understand the gravity of the suicide track that it was on.  This Netanyahu plea, despite Obama's promise that the United States "has Israel's back," clearly did not sway Obama ... as our President repeatedly insisted that our current sanctions need more time to work.

And, thus Israel is on its own to watch the clock tick down to its looming nuclear destruction while Obama continues to dither.  It will then do what it has to do to counter this "existential threat" ... and not trust the United States to have its back.
