Some sports chestnuts:
Don Meredith, Dallas Cowboys Quarterback once said: "Coach Tom Landry is such a perfectionist that if he was married to Raquel Welch, he would expect her to cook.”
Harry Neale, professional hockey coach: "Last year we couldn't win at home and we were losing on the road. My failure as a coach was that I couldn't think of anyplace else to play.”
Doug Sanders, professional golfer: "I'm working as hard as I can to get my life and my cash to run out at the same time. If I can just die after lunch Tuesday, everything will be perfect.
Tommy LaSorda , L A Dodgers manager: "I found out that it's not good to talk about my troubles. Eighty percent of the people who hear them don't care and the other twenty percent are glad I'm having them.”
E.J. Holub, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker regarding his 12 knee operations: "My knees look like they lost a knife fight with a midget.”
Vic Braden, tennis instructor: "My theory is that if you buy an ice-cream cone and make it hit your mouth, you can learn to play tennis. If you stick it on your forehead, your chances aren't as good.
Tommy John , N.Y. Yankees, recalling his 1974 arm surgery: "When they operated, I told them to add in a Koufax fastball. They did, but unfortunately it was Mrs. Koufax's.”
Walt Garrison, Dallas Cowboys fullback when asked if Tom Landry ever smiles: "I don't know. I only played there for nine years.”
John Breen, Houston Oilers: "We were tipping off our plays. Whenever we broke from the huddle, three backs were laughing and one was pale as a ghost.”
Bum Phillips, New Orleans Saints, after viewing a lopsided loss to the Atlanta Falcons: "The film looks suspiciously like the game itself.”
Paul Horning, Green Bay Packers running back on why his marriage ceremony was before noon: "Because if it didn't work out, I didn't want to blow the whole day.”
Knute Rockne, when asked why Notre Dame had lost a game: "I won't know until my barber tells me on Monday.”
Jim Frey, K.C. Royals manager when asked what advice he gives George Brett on hitting: "I tell him "Attaway to hit, George.”
Bill Walton, Portland Trail Blazers: "I learned a long time ago that 'minor surgery' is when they do the operation on someone else, not you.”
Rick Venturi, Northwestern football coach: "The only difference between me and General Custer is that I have to watch the films on Sunday.
The great John McKay, who coached USC for a bunch of years and later became the initial head coach of those terrible expansion Tampa Bay Bucs teams, had a few zingers. He was once asked after a lopsided loss what he thought of his team’s execution. He said: “I think it would be a very good idea.” On another occasion after a serious whipping he was asked what the turning point of the game had been. He replied: “The Star Spangled Banner.”
Former UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden, “Coaching is highly overrated. The team with the better players almost always wins.
Thanks John B.!

It’s called the American Experience Program … and includes Andrew Gutmann, the New York father who pulled his daughter from the prestigious Brearley School for much the same reasoning.

The American Experience ProgramWednesday, January 12, 2022
About the American Experience Program Formed in 2021 in partnership between The Manhattan Institute for Policy Research and educators Andrew Gutmann and Paul Rossi, the American Experience Program is an educational program for New York City high school students that focuses on America’s self-governing principles of free inquiry, free speech, public debate, democratic decision-making, and the decentralization of power through federalism, localism, civil society, separation of powers, and capitalism. When followed, these principles enable the American people to succeed and flourish. When ignored, a rash of social and political problems emerge, leading to polarization and potentially radicalization. It is our hope that the American Experience Program can impart upon our rising generation the knowledge to perpetuate America’s success and ideals and safeguard and promote its longstanding governing principles.
About the Manhattan Institute The mission of the Manhattan Institute is to develop and disseminate new ideas that foster greater economic choice and individual responsibility. The Institute serves as a leading voice of free-market ideas, shaping political culture since our founding in 1977. Ideas that have changed the United States and its urban areas for the better—welfare reform, tort reform, proactive policing, and supply-side tax policies, among others—are at the heart of MI’s legacy. While continuing with what is tried and true, we are constantly developing new ways of advancing our message in the battle of ideas.

Decisions made with insufficient information are the bane of mankind. And unfortunately, we are suffering through such a situation with the current COVID pandemic … resulting in sloppy decision making due to garbage data. The primary fault in this healthcare debacle has been poor information gathering and analysis … much of it driven by: poorly designed data collection and verification incentives, lack of decision-making candor, flawed data structures and weak data analysis and visualization software.
One would think that, for the billions we spend for our government healthcare agencies, someone would have addressed these issues?

I wrote this post over six years ago which refers to an eight-years earlier post. I’ve done some serious editing on it. And title it “Nature’s Gifts” if that makes you more comfortable:
In my recent tutoring in chemistry the subject of exothermic and endothermic reactions has come up. In researching this subject one Internet site mentions that it is fortunate that the reaction between oxygen and nitrogen is endothermic (needs energy to proceed) since otherwise our atmosphere would have burned off eons ago. This reminded me of a post in “Junkier Science,” another of my blogs, that I wrote almost eight years ago that pointed out many of the scientific truths that, were they not to be, we would not be here ... to which the above assessment needs to be added. Here is this older blog contents:
I am not a religious person but I do find it remarkable that man inhabits an ecosystem that enjoys a plethora of possibly providential coincidences … any of which, if missing, would likely doom us to annihilation. Here they are as best I can assemble:
-Gravity/Celestial Dynamics – Otherwise the Earth and all of its creatures would go flying off into space
-Electricity/Magnetism – Creating our Earth’s magnetic field … otherwise the sun’s cosmic rays would strip away our atmosphere and cook us all like so many shish-ka-bobs
-Atomic Fusion – Otherwise our sun would not be providing us warmth, light, and sustenance … with predictable results
-Photons/Electromagnetic Spectrum – Otherwise we would be without light and all the benefits that light and other radiations provide us
-The Limit of Speed (Speed of Light) – Otherwise all the radiation from all the universe’s sources would be instantaneous and very likely lethal
-Number and Variety of Elements (Periodic Table) – Life could not exist without this wide array of elemental building blocks
-Earth’s Self-Regulating Atmosphere – Without these feedback mechanisms (including the ozone layer), our planet would be as devoid of life as Mars or our moon
-Water — enough said?
-Photosynthesis – Otherwise the source of all nourishment on Earth would not exist and carbon dioxide might smother our atmosphere (like on Mars.)
-Light Ice — Ice, strangely, being lighter than water, floats and insulates the water beneath it … otherwise, life might not exist outside our tropics
-Combustion (Oxygen/Carbon Dioxide Cycle) — Otherwise energy and what it brings to life (locomotion, warmth, etc.) would be very scarce
-DNA/Evolution/Organic Chemistry – Otherwise life, if it existed at all, would be extremely primitive and short-lived
-Vast Variety of Molecules/Inorganic Chemistry – Otherwise, most of our planet’s basics (carbohydrates, carbon dioxide, ozone, etc.) would not exist
- Water's Capillary Action -- Otherwise water and its solutes could not travel against the pull of gravity and most plants would not exist
- Carbon-Based Life Forms – Other-element-based life forms are problematic and, if sustainable, likely would be quite inefficient
And, I am sure, many more …

Once upon a time at the North Pole a week before Christmas, Santa Claus’s elves went on strike for higher pay ... and so, Mrs. Claus had to spend most of her day finishing up the toys for all the world’s children.
Then two days before the big night, a stomach flu struck the raindeer stable ... requiring Mrs. Claus to muck out all their stalls twice a day.
Next, Santa came down with a bad cold ... so between all these other chores Mrs. Claus had to climb the stairs multiple times a day to bring St. Nick hot tea with lemon and honey ... and bowls of chicken soup.
But Christmas Eve finally came and the elves agreed ... for double-time wages ... to load up all the toy bags and fill the sleigh ... the reindeer were full of Kaopectate ... and Santa was well enough to begin his annual sleighride.
After he was off, Mrs. Claus sank, exhausted, into her easy chair. But, just then, there was a tiny knock on the front door. With a sigh, Mrs. Claus pulled herself to her feet and, annoyed, opened the door.
There, dusted with a new-fallen snow, was a beautiful little angel holding a freshly-cut fir tree. She said to Mrs. Claus, “What do you want me to do with this Christmas tree, Mrs. Claus?”
And so, boys and girls, that is why we often see an angel stuck atop of a Christmas tree.

I, and I am sure a lot of other Americans, have been quite frustrated with our federal health organizations (CDC, NIH, NIAID, HHS, FDA, NLM, HRSA, AHRQ) and how they report, and don’t report, the statistics surrounding the Wuhan-Fauci virus. Anyone who has tried to find the key facts about what is happening comes away with the suspicion that more data is hidden than revealed … and one quickly concludes that this is purposeful.
So we should required the public airing of the following crosstab COVID statistics from our over-bloated government:
- daily diagnosed cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths by variants by age grouping
- daily diagnosed cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths by vaccine brand by age grouping
- daily diagnose cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths by variants by state by age grouping
- daily diagnose cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths by vaccine status and natural immunity by age grouping
- averse vaccine reactions (aka VAERS) by time delay by vaccine brand by age grouping
- treatment efficacy by COVID type by treatment type by age age grouping
- The percentage of people who died from COVID vs. those who died with COVID
- COVID deaths by co-morbidities by gender by age grouping
And, if these birds don’t have all these crosstabs, their funding should be slashed.
Is this too much to ask?
