Cuba Today

I recently mentioned that liberal friends returned from Cuba (right before Castro boxed). ... see: Measure of the Man. As I have indicated, they would not go back for a variety of reason ... but mostly because of the poverty and oppressive atmosphere. However, they did relate a few interesting facts about their experience:

Cuba imposes a 4% tax on converting foreign currency to Cuban currency ... except for American dollars which are hit with an additional 20% surcharge. You had to use this Cuban currency scam because you cannot use credit cards. For less than a week in poverty-stricken Havana, they had to bring in almost $3,000 US.

The primary protein offered at meals was pork ... almost exclusively. And, although they do have cattle, very little beef is eaten. Also though Cuba is surrounded by water, fish is usually not available. Guess why fishing boats are not permitted to fish these plentiful waters? You guessed it ... any boat going out would not come back.

Cuba was once the sugar cane capital of the world. ... and it was the Soviet Union buying this sugar that supplied most of Cuba's hard currency. Today there is virtually no sugar cane grown in Cuba. These fields are all now lying fallow.

They were warned not to talk politics anywhere because everything is bugged -- hotel rooms, cabs, restaurants, even churches. Therefore conversations with Cubans were very circumspect. But as best as they could determine almost every young person wanted to flee Cuba.

Necktie Party

A ragtag posse composed of Barack Obummer, the Clinton crime family, Bernie Sanders, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and many other desperadoes are in the process of stringing up the Democrat Party. It has taken them a number of years, but the extra-legal and self-serving actions of these political lynchers has the Dem Party gasping for air. The Party is not dead, quite yet, but the rope is cutting well into its neck as the lamentations over Fidel Castro's death rises to a crescendo from these masked men and women. And Jill Stein ... with Hellary's blessing ... has just slapped the horse's rump saddling the doomed party and yelled "giddy-up" ... as result of her contesting the recent presidential voting results in three states.

The United States used to be a two party country ...  but, the neck-tie party of these western outlaws suggests that this dipole is rapidly becoming a political monopole. All because of the gigantic egos of these teeny teeny people.

Measure of the Man

Fidel Castro is dead ... joining the tens of thousands of political opponents he had put in front of his firing squads and the hundreds of thousands of his subjects who died aspiring for freedom. Did he do any good? I suppose so ... there are always accidental beneficiaries of evil. But the oppressive pall he drew over his country to justify his political obsessions is his true legacy. The fact that Cuban exiles have ignored polite respect for the dead and are celebrating in Miami demonstrates the actual measure of this man ... and his countrymen would be dancing in the streets of  Havana if there were even a smidgen of liberty there. So they revel in silence ... behind decaying walls ... still "yearning to breath free."

Even the worms will likely eschew this tyrant ...
  

Youthful Indiscretions

When I was 19. and was working a summer construction job in State College, Pennsylvania, I was approached by a recruiter from Fidel Castro to join his Cuban revolution. I thought about it for about 30 seconds before I declined. But, being young and full of daring-do and having a head full of mush (a Rush Limbaugh expression), I easily could have screwed up my life for good with a wrong decision then.

I'm sure that many of the foreign fighters from England, Belgium, France, Germany, etc. who have joined ISIS over the last year made their decisions with less studied consideration .... be it wanderlust, romantic idealism, and/or the pull of danger. The reward for many of these fighters has not been all that they expected ... as about 100 of them have been executed by ISIS when they became disillusioned and tried to leave this insurrection to return home ... see: Breitbart Article.

It is amazing sometimes how our callow youths ever reach adulthood when they are surrounded by the toxic temptations such as the Internet now lays at their feet. Youthful indiscretion often seems a bigger reason for a young person's demise than any other possible disease, accident, or freak of nature.

Around five years ago, Hugo Chavez said to the assembled U.N. members that, as a result of George W. Bush’s previously being at this same podium, there was still a lingering smell of sulfur.  In other words, Bush was the Devil personified.  I’ve always found it fascinating that many politicians try to cleanse their own souls by accusing others of their own transgressions … and I’m not just painting liberals with this sin … many conservatives have also been culpable. 

And so it is with Hugo Chavez.  His sins since grabbing power in Venezuela in 1998 have been rife … from corruption … to drug trafficking … to kidnapping … to anti-semitism … to despotism … even to murder … see: Curacao Chronicle.

Now Hugo Chavez appears to be on his deathbed in Cuba … and when he does succumb, I’m sure that there will be much donning of sackcloth and gnashing of teeth among the liberal glitterati of this country (Sean Penn, for example).  However, when this happens, I fully expect a fissure to open up in the earth somewhere near Havana … belching fire and the actual smell of sulfur … and Hugo baby being escorted, under the blare of out-of-tune trumpets, down to his fiery residence for all of eternity.   (Hopefully in tandem with Fidel Castro?)
