Banned in Boston

In a chapter out of George Orwell, the pompous powers that be shut down free speech on the Boston Common Saturday in a cute bit of "civic concern." I have no idea what ideas were going to be expressed at the rotunda there because they weren't expressed. Some speakers were physically kept from reaching this platform in the name of "safety." Thousands of self-righteous counter-demonstrators, a few dressed in black with black masks no less, assembled there to show their hatred of "hate speech" ... defined as anything that might possibly go against the grain of their orthodoxy.

I seriously doubt that there would have been any truly obnoxious rhetoric coming from these few speakers who were scurried away in police squad cars before word one. ... but then, we will never know ... because fascism took hold to suppress ... fascism. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and his phalanx of police officers kept his city sanitized from the imagined invective. After all, the ironic motif of this rally was in support of our First Amendment guaranteeing free speech and, in the process, Boston crushed free speech.

Afterward: Whatever happened to "defend to the death their fight to say it"? Is it now "defend to being slightly uncomfortable their right to say it"?

International Commuters

"Illegal immigrants" ... taboo, change the term  to "undocumented workers" ... oops, change it again to "dreamers" ... oops, now the ACLU has mandated that this same group be called "international commuters" ... see: Breitbart Story. International commuters! Are these people going back and forth across our borders on a regular basis? I doubt it. I suspect that most of these international commuters' return trips are paid for by the Border Patrol.

More and more such weasel words are being used to try to change the public perception of issues. "Global warming" has morphed into "climate change" which is now being dubbed "environmental sustainability" ... see: National Science Foundation Piece. Who can argue with sustaining the environment? Don't fall into such a man trap! If you do, then the real rub becomes how these language manipulators insist that such environmental sustaining be accomplished ... sequester CO2, the source of all life. Once you buy the premise, then you must also buy the fatal consequences.

I've written before about such newspeak ... see: Groupthink and New Newspeak and U-Turn and Job Lock and More Newspeak. George Orwell (and myself) were trying to warn you against such forked-tongued political language manipulators. Clearly those that control the vernacular, control the minds of the masses. We can view this as semantic silliness ... but it is also extremely dangerous.

Can we turn the tables on those who wish to corrupt our language ... and call them "sons of tyranny?"

Groupthink

Liberal Bill Maher finally addressed the students at that liberal bastion, UCal Berkeley, on Saturday and told students to avoid “groupthink” (that famous and insightful term from George Orwell’s book, “1984”) … be an individual, a free thinker. He ironically also cajoled them to be soldiers in the fight against climate change. “I hope all of you here today consider the environment to be paramount among the many challenges we face.” See: Breitbart Article.

Need I point out the obvious to you dear reader? The religion of climate change is one of the most blatant examples today of "groupthink." Bill Maher might just as well have been speaking “newspeak,” warning of “thoughtcrimes” to the “Ministry of Truth” members at “Airstrip One” (other insightful terms from “1984”). Maher, much as he likes to view himself, clearly is no hammer thrower.

More Newspeak

George Orwell
George Orwell warned us about the insidious nature of government.  He coined the word "newspeak" to show how politicians can screw themselves into the ground with their twisting of words and the meanings of words.  I have spoken of this before, see: Red Flags.  Our forked-tongued President is at this newspeak thing once again ... saying that increasing government debt limits doesn't increase the government debt, see: CNS News Story.

And chicken bleep is caviar.

Red Flags

Yesterday, I blogged about how the Obama administration was trying to control the language describing Muslim jihadism (see: Wouldn't It Be Nice).  Now our President, in a graduation speech at Annapolis, has tried to remove the term “war on terror” from our political vernacular (see: Reuters Article).  I am quite certain that many news outlets will now dutifully fall in line with his suggestion.

Once again we see despotic leaders trying to control the body politic by dictating the language that is deemed acceptable to them.  President Obama’s Naval Academy speech is yet another attempt at thought control … and is straight out of George Orwell.  This should be another gigantic red flag to us all.  Orwell warned us when he said:
Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.

and

The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of IngSoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible. Its vocabulary was so constructed as to give exact and often very subtle expression to every meaning that a Party member could properly wish to express, while excluding all other meaning and also the possibility of arriving at them by indirect methods. This was done partly by the invention of new words, but chiefly by eliminating undesirable words and stripping such words as remained of unorthodox meanings, and so far as possible of all secondary meaning whatever.

For more and better expressed thoughts on this same subject see: The American Thinker Piece.

George Orwell was right on the money in his novel “1984,” but his timing was off by about 30 years

Womb to Tomb

In his recent State of the Union message, President Obama has proposed a pedagogical initiative for preschoolers … a Super Head Start Program if you will.  (See: Breitbart Article).  This mandatory (babysitting?) program would involve the federal government matching state funds in order to send children age four and up to preschool … on the governments’ dime … and with Big Brother's oversight and controls.  Here is the meaningful quote from the above article:
Qualifications for the funding include: teachers would have to hold college degrees in certain categories related to education, restrictions on class size, and a government-approved curriculum.
The catch-term for intrusive government used to be called “cradle to grave.”  Now, since our Solons have determined that they have a lot to say about whether a baby gets born, it really is now “womb to tomb.”  I don’t know about you but I am really beginning to think George Orwell was a major prophet when he wrote his books, Animal Farm and 1984.  I still recall, in my callow youth, a certain dismay at seeing how Russia and China were taking over the rearing of small children at the height of these countries' ideological frenzies … in order to indoctrinate them into the ways of the State.  Now its our turn.

I can’t leave this blog post without repeating one last quote from Our Dear Leader in this same speech to Congress: “Let me repeat – nothing I’m proposing tonight should increase our deficit by a single dime.”

Joesph Goebbels was right: “If you tell a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.”

Weasel Words

Last night, Mr. Mendacity gave his State of the Union Message. I could not bring myself to listen to his modern-day equivalent of “War is peace.  Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” (George Orwell, 1984).  But there were listeners, some of whom found that Obama was stretching the truth well past the breaking point.  Even NPR this morning  found many of his more audacious remarks to be questionable.  To catch up on his speech, I found the following fact-check listing of many of Obama’s truth-twistings.  It is well worth a read:  Breitbart Analysis.  (Actually, even the Lily Ledbetter analysis is incomplete.  There have long been laws that guarantee equal pay (for women) for equal work.  The Lily Ledbetter law did nothing more than extend the period over which lawyers could sue employers for such misfeasance.)  After pulling out your hair over these whoppers, you might consider a stiff martini.

I have also heard that, last night Obama bragged that his administration has created six million jobs since he took office … an oft-repeated misdirection.  This may be true in the sense that six million Americans have found new jobs.  But what he doesn’t enumerate is how many Americans have lost jobs during this same period.  When His Royal Highness took office in January of 2008, there were 145.4 million workers.  Now, there are 143.3 million workers in this country … which means that there are now 2.1 million fewer workers … while at the same time our population has grown by 10.9 million (Source Bureau of Labor Statistics).  Basically, 6 million Americans may have found jobs, but 8.1 million have obviously lost jobs.  If one were measuring the height of the tide last year this way, it would be 2 miles high because one would never count for all its ebbs.

The real sad part of this narrative is that obviously maybe half of all Americans are taken in by this claptrap … the uninformed voter if you will.  Are you one of them?
