I can’t help but wonder if those book publishers which give lavish and unrealistic advances to authors who never do come close to selling enough books to cover this cost (e.g., Andrew Cuomo) … I wonder if they ever cover these losses in some other manner?

I recall when getting published meant that you had to put down some money for the first printing. There were professors who had stacks of boxes in their office with 950 of the first 1000 printed years later.
