Supreme Irony

The object lesson to be drawn from the current Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confiirmation imbroglio is dripping  full of irony. This irony derives from a previous (1960) Supreme Court decision (New York Times Co. v. Sullivan) that makes it very burdensome for someone in public office to sue successfully for libel or slander. This almost 60-year-old decision puts an almost impossible burden on the plaintiff ... that the defendant had to not only known the allegation was false .. but must have acted with "malice aforethought."  It might seem obvious why some media might issue lies ... but proving motivation is a mile-high hurdle.

Therefore, if Kavanaigh were to survive this Democrat assassination attempt and take his seat on the Supreme Court, he likely couldn't or wouldn't sue Christine Ford, the New Yorker magazine or Michael Avenati. And, even worse, if such a case were to make it back to the Supreme Court, Justice Kavanaugh would likely have to recuse himself from the case.

The latest "Daily Humor" from the New Yorker,

Depicted President Trump as a porker.

And had his saliva all runny.

Its caption was quite un-funny ...

Not amusing, not droll, not even a snorker!

Daily Humor?

I'll stop calling you 'the enemy of the peopl' when you stop printing crossword puzzles I can't solve.

Somehow I got on the New Yotker magazine's list. Now, every day, I find in my email spam folder a cartoon  from this once-great magazine titled "Daily Humor". One problem, these cartoons are seldom if ever humorous ... generally just snarky satire ... possibly because they are almost always unhinged jabs at President Trump. Now, I am not Dave Barry when it comes to judging humor ... but I do know I have never even cracked a smile at this political bilge. I suppose that this stable of Democrat-operative cartoons are required to massage the bruised egos of upper East and West supercilious siders in Manhattan to continue to allow them to feel superior to the rest of us  deplorables.

If you find the above cartoon funny, I'll eat my shoe ...

J.D. Salinger

PBS has just aired a two-hour documentary on J.D. Salinger, the best-selling author of The Catcher in the Rye … originally published in 1951 … and his book sales have once again soared … see: Twin Cities Link.  This documentary revealed many aspects of this writer’s life I had not known … his military service… his first marriage to a German agent … his writing for the New Yorker … his penchant for young girls … his two children by his second marriage … his egomania.  But it really didn’t explain why his first book, The Catcher, was his only true mega- success … see The Daily Beast Story.

As a high-school tutor west of Boston, I have had to reread this book and discuss it with a few of my students … and, in my opinion, it doesn’t hold up well in today’s society.  Holden Caulfield, the protagonist, spends most of this novel’s verbiage railing against the establishment and its icons … puritanical morality, honoring one’s parents, good sportsmanship, hard work, scholastic achievement, and even, believe it or not, diversity.  Good stuff for a kid of the 50’s and early 60’s, but Holden’s targets have now been relegated to the trash heap of modern society.  Most of his dragons have already been slain.

So Salinger’s obsessive desire for the privacy of rural New Hampshire … with his occasional sought-out ego burnishing by the literati set … had it seems some perceptive rationale. Maybe he understood that his ideas would not really age well.  After his passing last year at age 91, I am still left wondering the fate of his second wife and children.  For more of his life story see: IMDB Entry.

The Rapture

There are a number of Christians who believe in “The Rapture” … effectively Judgment Day … when the world will end and all saintly people will immediately rise unto heaven. And now a number of these Christians are convinced that this fateful day will commence May 21st of this year (see Judgment Day). This event may indeed happen, but color me skeptical.

A while back I entered a New Yorker magazine cartoon competition in which you were asked to supply a caption for a captionless cartoon. I didn’t win, but I thought my submission (for the above cartoon) was clearly of the New Yorker genre and should have at least gotten an honorable mention. My entry was: “Somehow I thought that The Rapture would be a little more selective.”
