Witch Hunt

The Benghazi Select Committee's 800 page report came out today and revealed that Hellary Clinton was the highest Cabinet officer in a real-time Situation Room meeting debating how to respond to the attack on our Benghazi Consulate and CIA Annex. Even after our Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta had given the order to send a rescue mission, this critical meeting not only kept this order from being carried out, but then spent two hours concocting the political red herring that it was an Internet video that sparked this assault ... not Islamic terrorism. The indecision coming out of this exercise in cover-up caused the rescue squad in Spain to sit on the runway for three hours ... changing their clothing back and forth from uniforms to mufti four times because of the vacillation coming out of this meeting.

Of course, that heartless Democrat currently running for America's presidency claimed that there was nothing new in this report even though she had obviously not read it. "Time to move on," she mewled. If Hellery either gave the stand-down order to Panetta's rescue directive ... or if she acceded to such an order coming from the White House ... she is clearly unfit to serve as our Commander in Chief. And her posse is claiming that Trey Gowdy has just concluded a $7 million witch hunt. Probably true ... but we all now know who the witch was who was instrumental in causing the death of at least two brave Americans.

Representative Gowdy has requested that reporters, politicians and ordinary Americans read this report before they finally form their conclusions on this affair. I kind of doubt that many will, but, if you are a seeker of truth, here it is: Benghazi Report. As a reader of this blog confessed yesterday, he doesn't want to deal with such complexities. I know that this is what our cunning Clinton crone is counting on.

Afterward: To me, the door is not closed on this Benghazi affair unless and until we know who gave the stand-down order to the Marine rescue team ... no way.

The Players

Here are the major participants (so far) surrounding the September 11th, 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya:

Christopher Stevens, Ambassador to Libya, was killed in the September 11th attack in Benghazi.  Was in Benghazi at the behest of Hillary Clinton although this fact was curiously omitted from the Accountability Revue Board’s findings … even though it was testified to there by Greg Hicks.

Tyrone Woods, Sean Smith, and Glen Doherty, three other American defenders who were killed in Benghazi  by Islamic terrorists.

President Obama, was informed of the Benghazi attack-in-progress at about 5 PM on 9/11/12.  Supposedly told Leon Panetta, to “do whatever can be done to assist and protect Americans in harm’s way.”  After this, he was not heard from again for over 12 hours.  That next day he flew to Las Vegas to attend a campaign fund raiser.

Leon Panetta, Defense Secretary, testified to the Senate Armed Services Committee that no military assets were deployed to assist those under attack in Benghazi and that he had had no further communication with President Obama about this matter that night.

General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, when asked by Senator John McCain why there was no military response to the Benghazi attack said, “We did what our posture and capabilities allowed.” McCain said that this was “one of the most bizarre statements I’ve ever seen in my years here at the [Armed Services] committee.”

Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State, testified in late January in front of the Senate and House (but not under oath) that she wasn’t aware of the security problems in Benghazi and that she believed for many days thereafter that the attack in Benghazi was as a result of the YOUTUBE video.  Was famous for saying at these hearings “What difference at this point does it make!?!”

David Petraeus, honored General in Iraq and Afghanistan and former CIA Director, expressed frustration at the scrubbing of the original CIA talking points … particularly since he had traveled to Libya shortly after the Benghazi attack to get first-hand information.  He eventually went along with the White House narrative … but this didn’t save him from being outed for having an extra-marital affair which then led him to lose his military commission and his post at the CIA.

General Carter Ham, head of the African Command, there is a strange story that Leon Panetta relieved General Ham of this command when he refused to order a “stand down” of troops being sent to Benghazi.  This story has been refuted and, effectively, buried.

Thomas Pickering, former Ambassador to the U.N., together with the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullin, lead a State-Department-sponsored panel investigating the Benghazi attack (Accountability Review Board). Although Secretary Clinton never testified to this panel, it did find that the State Department was at fault for not providing additional security to the Benghazi mission.  Hillary Clinton accepted responsibility for this failing.  This review supposedly led to the “resignation of four State Department employees” (a now-disputed point … as they might have just been reassigned.)

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian Coptic Christian  wrote and produced of the controversial anti-Islam YOUTUBE video, "Innocence of Muslims" which was blamed by President Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Susan Rice as the reason for the attack on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi.  Shortly after the attack he was arrested on a parole violation and is still in prison.

Susan Rice, Ambassador to the U.N., went on five TV talk shows the Sunday after the attack to say that the YOUTUBE video was the reason for the attack and terrorists were not involved.

Darrell Issa, Republican Chairman of the House Government Oversight Committee has been pushing the Benghazi investigation ... and is often accused by the left of playing partisan politics.  Is currently seeking sworn depositions from Pickering and Mullin about their panel's investigation.

Elijah Cummings, ranking Democrat of the House Oversight Committee.  Made a very controversial comment in these Benghazi hearings, "death is part of life."

Greg Hicks, former deputy diplomatic chief of mission in Libya.  Testified at the House Oversight Committee that he called Hillary at 2:00 AM the night of the Benghazi attack and told her that it was terrorists.  Had a scathing phone call from Cheryl Mills after he questioned Susan Rice’s account of the Benghazi attacks as being the result of the YOUTUBE video.

Mark Thompson, acting deputy assistant secretary for counter-terrorism, testified in the Oversight Committee that special forces in Tripoli were told to “stand down” and not go to Benghazi to help quell the attack there.  These special forces were furious and their commander, Lt. Col. Gibson, said that it was “the first time in my career that a diplomat has more balls than somebody in the military.”

Eric Nordstrom, the former regional security officer in Libya, blamed, in testimony before the Oversight Committee, the Obama Administration for ignoring calls for more security in Benghazi.

Victoria Nuland, State Department spokesperson who directed the12 revisions to the talking points that Susan Rice then used to go on 5 talk shows the Sunday after the attack.

Beth Jones, Assistant Secretary to Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, called Greg Hicks to warn him to stop questioning the Administration's stance on the Benghazi attack.  Later at a meeting in Washington, she questioned Hick's management style in Libya and said his people were complaining.

Cheryl Mills, Hillary Clinton’s long-time chief of staff (and known hatchet person), called Greg Hicks to excoriate him for meeting with a congressman from Utah without a State Dept. lawyer present (due to lack of security clearance for the lawyer).  Hicks believes that this confrontation led to his demotion to a desk job at the State Department.

Philippe Reines, State Department spokesman, said that nobody tried to keep the Utah congressperson from speaking to anyone in Libya.

AWOL

Last week both Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, and the Joint Chief of Staff General, Martin Dempsey, reluctantly testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee that, once President Obama was told about the start of the attacks on the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012, he said that they should "do whatever they needed to do" ... then disappeared for the rest of the night (see: Huffington Post Story ... and read down to get some of the details and, also of course, some spin).  No phone calls to check on how things were going.  No additional instructions.  No follow-up visits to the White House Situation Room.  Nothing ... for the eight hours of the attacks.  (The same lack of concern and follow-up were displayed by Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.)

Now Obama is the Commander in Chief and any military response to this situation would have required his direct approval.  But he was incognito for whatever reason(s) ... and his dereliction of duty under these dire circumstances is reprehensible ... particularly since four Americans were killed as a consequence.  Our President was, in fact, absent without leave.

Given a screw-up this monumental on Obama's and Hillary Clinton's part, it is not a surprise (to me anyway) that they then concocted the bogus story that some obscure anti-Muslim video was behind the Benghazi murders.  And they stuck by this silly story for over a week ... and are still blaming the fog of faulty intelligence for their conduct.  Wouldn't it be nice if we could also hear from the survivors of this Benghazi massacre?

"What difference does it make!?"  Quite a bit, Hillary ... quite a bit.  This story is not going to disappear.

Ham Sandwich

When the Watergate scandal was in full swing, I wore an American flag pin upside down on my jacket until Tricky Dick Nixon resigned. If I were still wearing suits, I would repeat this cry of distress today. As the Benghazi scandal continues to fester, it is becoming clearer exactly what occurred there … and it wasn’t pretty. A reader of the Powerline blog has assembled a detailed timeline of events there that helps to answer a lot of questions. Please take the time to read this fascinating hyperlink so that you too may start to connect the sordid dots: Powerline Blog Reference. One revelation in this post was that there was, despite direct orders to “stand down,” a small rescue mission sent to Libya which did reach Benghazi in time to affect things somewhat. Fascinating reading!

Now we learn that our Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta has relieved General Carter Ham, the leader of the U.S. Africa command, of his duties … see: Washington Times Story. One does not have to be a genius to understand that this was likely due to Ham’s sending of this and/or another proposed rescue mission. Now comes the interesting part. It seems clear that this rather drastic action on Panetta’s part indicates that this “stand down” order was from him … or, more likely, from President Obama. An order from below this level should not have engendered such drastic punishment to the general. Yes, General Ham was clearly wrong to disobey such an order … just as it was more egregiously wrong to issue it.

Back to the cover-up. The gang that killed Osama (and apparently helped cause four Americans in Benghazi to suffer the same fate), in the cold light of dawn, realized how this screw-up might affect the upcoming Presidential elections. So they clearly started covering their tracks … and grabbed the convenient excuse of the You-Tube anti Islamic video being the cause of the Benghazi “riots.” They peddled this concoction for almost three weeks and offered lame excuses about an on-going investigation as to why they couldn’t answer direct questions. Now that things are quickly unraveling, they are still hoping to make it to November 6th without the whole fetid mess being exposed. Nixon did avoid the more serious Watergate revelations until after his election. But given the speed of current news cycles on the Internet (the New York Times, Washington Post, etc. are doing their level best to ignore this story), I doubt if Obama will be quite so lucky. I sincerely hope not.

Butter for Guns

For those of you who voted for Barack Obama three years ago, he promised that he would take this country in a new direction ... and he very clearly has.  Just when the Chinese are deploying missiles which can take out our aircraft carriers from 1,800 miles away (see: Washington Times Story), The Barry and his hand puppet, Leon Panetta, are cutting $500 billion out of our Defense Department budget ("guns") over the next ten years (Jimmy Carter redux).  These are not cuts from projected spending (called "baseline-budget" cuts), but these are real cuts ... that go far beyond the cutting of fat and means the atrophying of our military muscle.

Now contrast this with the fact that the Obama administration is poised to ask for another $1.2 trillion increase in the U.S. debt ceiling  (see: Wall Street Journal Story) ... only five short months after the debt ceiling was raised by $2.1 trillion this past August (see: Bloomberg Story) ... an increase that was implied to last the United States Treasury through this year's elections.  Since we are now totally out of Iraq militarily, these debt ceiling increases are clearly and mainly meant to cover the cost of Obama's vast social-program spending and government expansions (known as "butter").

My spider senses are even beginning to suggest that Obama is now trying to rush through many of his radical structural changes to our government ... in anticipation of his being booted from office this coming fall.  So, the question that now presents itself is: Over the next ten years or so, is the United States going first to expire from the hardening of its arteries from all this social-spending butter ... or be forced to kneel and lick the scaly feet of the Dragon of the East due to our lack of the necessary military might?

The Gong Show

A number of years back there was a TV production called The Gong Show. On it, a number of no-talent contestants strut or sung their “stuff” until one of the judges couldn’t stand it any longer and stood up and rang a big gong … which caused this pitiful performance to be hooked. (This genre was recently repeated on American Idol where Simon Cowell’s acerbic tongue took the place of the gong.)

Now, we have a repeat of The Gong Show on the national stage insofar as our response(s) to the current crisis in Egypt. Viz:
- Yesterday the United States’ Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, said that the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood is “largely secular … has eschewed violence and has decried al-Qaeda as a perversion of Islam." This is the same group which assassinated Anwar Sadat and was where Ayman Al-Zawahiri (the #2 man in Al-Qaeda) and Mohamed Atta (the leader of the 9/11 attacks) learned their trade.
- Also yesterday, Leon Panetta, the Director of our CIA for heaven’s sake, said that there was a “strong likelihood” that Murbarak would step down by the end of the day. When this didn’t happen, Panetta said that he got this information from the national press. Does he not have a multi-billion dollar intelligence network behind him?
- President Obama has held more all-too-public postures relative to this Egyptian crisis than Carter’s proverbial Little Liver Pills. First, Mubarak must go, then he must cause an orderly transition to Democracy, and then the Muslim Brotherhood needs to be part of the next Egyptian government. He even met with this radical group right after his inauguration (see: Muslim Brotherhood Meeting.)
- In late January, Vice President Joe Biden said that Hosni Murbarak was no dictator and he shouldn’t step down. He has been sequestered in the Naval Observatory ever since.
- Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has said “the Egyptian government is stable and is looking for ways to respond to the legitimate needs and interests of the Egyptian people" (see Hillary Speaks.) Not too much later she appealed for an orderly transition to democracy in Egypt.

Is there any position that the United States has not taken relative to this extremely serious situation in Egypt? Back to The Gong Show … Boing! Boing! Boing! Boing! Boing!
