Russian Roulette

“It’s just obvious, you can’t have free immigration and a welfare state.” — Milton Friedman

What could be more suicidal than the Democrats trying to drastically increase “free stuff” in the United States while, at the same time, refusing to fix our broken immigration system?

A few points:
- This immigration is not a uniquely American problem. If anything it is far more pronounced in North Africa and the Middle East.
- This is not a new problem. It has been going for centuries.
- It is a problem of global awareness. The 1% at the other extreme--poor, uneducated--can now see through the lens of the internet that a better life is possible.
- It is problem where the bulk of immigrants overstaying visas and chain migrating are so bold that the FLOTUS can pull it off.
- It is a problem of compassion. If sick and hungry children at the border, you take care of them. Nothing special. Maybe a lot of surplus American cheese.
- It is a problem where if you totally block those at the border, there is a period of time where it becomes a Mexican crisis of a huge backed up population that is not ours to repatriate.

As to the free stuff, even for card-carrying, tax-paying citizens:
- The current system often bankrupts you if you go for the best education and cannot get a scholarship.
- The current system often bankrupts you if you get really ill and all your wealth is precisely the cost of the medicines.

When America was great, service providers in the healthcare and education sectors weren't getting six-figure incomes while working in nine-figure facilities.
