H.L. Mencken

Despite the fact that he was an ardent Democrat and a rabid misogynist, the curmudgeon author and journalist, H.L. Mencken, is one of my favorites. He was singularly insightful … kind of like a more acerbic Mark Twain ... and his many bon mots are quite entertaining … see: Brainy Quote and Quotations Page.

Here are three of my favorites:

   - "The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule."

   - "If a politician found he had cannibals among his constituents, he would promise them missionaries for dinner."

  - "An idealist is one who, on noticing that a rose smells better than a cabbage, concludes that it will also make better soup,"
