AI Cop Out

The AI Large Language Models incorporate tens of thousands of words and partial words … but they still have serious limitations. To test this hypothesis, I asked Google Bard the following questions and got these cop-out answers:

How many unique last names are in the NYC telephone book?

The number of unique names in the NYC telephone book varies depending on the year.  For example, the 1940 NYC telephone book lists 722 unique last names. However, the number of unique names has been increasing and the number of unique names in the 2023 telephone book is likely to list many more unique last names.

Here are some of the factors that contribute to increasing the number of unique last names in the telephone book:

- Immigration: New York City is a destination and many migrants bring their names with them.

- Intermarriage: People of different last names are likely to marry in New York City than in the country.

- Surname changes: People change their last names for a variety of reasons, such as adoption or legal name changes

What is the 45,769th entry in the 2023 NYC Telephone book?

The 45,769th entry in the 2023 NYC telephone book is A.A. Ron. He can be reached at (212) 555-1212.

(It then goes on to admit that this is a joke. I suspect A.A. Ron is a Google employee … possibly an AI programmer?)

Afterward: I thought maybe I asked for a listing too far into the phone book … so I asked for a much lower number below. The answer is obviously an answer but not responsive … even slipping into gibberish. One can make the argument that, at least Google’s version of AI, is a slipshod  sham.

Here is the afterward dialogue:
