George Will has turned squishy in recent years … but he has recently hit on an important observation ... covering Marshall McLuhan (hot and cool media) in a column in the WaPo (behind a paywall). I have not read this column but I did hear an extensive review of Will’s column on talk radio … and I found it revealing.

Basically, George Will opines that the trough where Americans consume their news has changed from “cool” dead-tree newsprint to the red-hot internet … and the characteristics of these media outlets has changed our social intercourse dramatically.

When we get our news online, generally the news outlets generate more revenue per news story or opinion piece based on the number of “eyeballs” and clicks it captures. This incents the provider to sensationalize these items with fake news or questionable opinion. 

QED … the internet is a much hotter media outlet than newspapers and magazines … and its temperature increase is reflected in our overheated society.

Thanks for the insight, George. I’m sure you expressed it much better than I did here.

I guess the Russia invasion of Ukraine has knocked that notion into a cocked hat … as those supporting and supplying Ukraine are still buying oil and natural gas from Putin … if he lets them.

And what if China invades Taiwan and the West is drawn into another proxy war with Beijing? How will we resolve buying drugs, EV batteries, solar panels, cell phones, semiconductors … and many other critical items from our proxy enemy? But we will have to … or surrender.

Can we ask the World Economic Forum for our money back?

Afterthought: Our only teeny tiny leverage with China are the Trump tariffs … which Biden, in his not-so-infinite wisdom, is quietly getting rid of.

It appears that Senator Kyrsten Sinema will only support Senator Joe Manchin’s proposed “Inflation Reduction” bill if it does not include the 15% alternative minimum tax on corporate profits over $1 billion … and nix the elimination of the carried interest tax loophole for hedge fund managers. And, if this is the final bill being voted on, I would hope that Manchin would do the honorable thing … and vote against his own legislation!

Afterward: Typical Democrat tactic … make things so complicated that voters never realize how badly they are being screwed.

I have argued with a commenter on this blog about the merits of Jimmy Carter’s presidency … which is generally regarded as a disaster. See: Obvious Truth

The sniper’s point basically is how can a good God-fearing man be such a bad leader?

Well, simple Pilgrim … because he was unable to understand that what it takes to be a pious person does not carry-over into being a good leader of a country.

A simple example … Christ told his followers that if someone strikes you, turn the other cheek. But if China or Russia nukes New York City, should we offer them Chicago?

Seems obvious to me that this was Carter’s flaw … he forgot that he was not a devout witness for Christ just for himself … he was representing all of us … a huge difference. And he did a lot of stupid things as a consequence … like declaring that Taiwan belongs to China …
