Watch out! Beto O’Rourke is coming for your “weapons of war!” If lightning struck and Beto prevailed, what might this mean in the over-all homicide rates. To find out, let’s go to the numbers:

2018 FBI Murder Statistics (see: Statista Site):
Handguns: 6,603
Firearms not stated: 2,063
Knives or cutting instruments: 1,515
Other weapons or weapons not stated: 900   [including poisons?]
Personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.): 672
Blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc.): 443
Rifles: 297
Shotguns: 235
Other guns: 167

And in 2016: 39 murders out of 11,961 were committed by AR-15s, AK-47s and like weapons (0.3%)... see: Extranosalley Site.

Perhaps these type of statictics are why the last “assault weapons ban” in the 1990’s was not renewed. If the Congress really wants to reduce firearm murders, they would need to eliminate all guns. And, to do this, it would need to repeal the Second Amendment. Good luck with that!

It seems to me, kind reader, that just outlawing these “weapons of war” again would not be, in the grand scheme of things, very influential on these murder statistics ... even mass shootings ... and could be likened to pissing up a rope.

The Solution

The latest mass shooting in Midland and Odessa, Texas pulls the fresh scab off of the issue of guns and what needs to be done to stop such insanity. There are many sure-fie solutions (intended pun) that are proposed: complete background checks, limiting ammunition clips, banning “assault” rifles, restricting violent computer games, “red flag” laws, social media screenings, more “open carry” laws, compulsory gun buybacks, even repealing the Second Amendment ...some of these suggestions having already been tried and failed ... or been politically unpalatable. Most every politician has a “simple solution.”

But there is only one possible simple solution to this social scourge — and that is there is no simple solution. Unfortunately, like many manias of past times, this one will likely only go away with time. At some point ... possibly years hence ... we will look back and realize that these mass shootings have gone away. Why this has happened we will only learn by understanding how our society had evolved in the interim. I will not suggest what this will be ... because I do not know what it will be ... nor do you.

My only hope is that this solution is a change in our society and not an infringement of our freedoms.

School Shootings

Liberals seem to have but three solutions to damp down gun violence at schools ... universal background checks, compulsory gun registrations and the outlawing of "assault" rifles with large magazines ... as if the gun commits these heinous crimes. All of these constraints would, in my opinion, do little to stop the rash of school shootings we have recently experienced ... and they would do absolutely nothing to retard the criminals and gang bangers from their wild-west mayhem.

The solution to the rash of urban drive-by shootings would be to start or reinstate stop and frisk ... and the discouraging of the "Black Lives Matter" anti-police movement.

But insofar as fixing the school shooting plague our society needs to focus on the shooter ... and this requires a trade-off between individual liberty and societal good. Thus, I have the following suggestions:

- Relax the HIPAA rules that prohibit mental health workers from reporting incidents of patients who have indicated that they want to kill others. This reporting could be done through a panel of mental-health experts who would review the evidence and decide if it met a threshold of sufficient danger that required further action. If so, then the proper authorities would be notified.

- All American social-media systems should be required to have filters in place that identify individuals who issue radical anti-social threats on their postings ... and then provide information to help law enforcement zero in on these possible killers.

- Existing gun registration systems should be scanned to identify individuals or relatives of individuals who are buying large quantities of guns and ammunition in a short period of time.

- School administrators should be asked to place in a database public data on possible nut cases under their authority ... excluding any information which had not been collected under strict formal disciplinary procedures.

A data mining system should then be constructed that melds the information from these four filters to rank threat levels for possible school shooters ... who then would be interviewed further to determine exactly how dangerous they are ... and incarcerated if necessary. Thus, authorities might proactively reduce or eliminate these school-shooting threats.
