The difference between hieroglyphic/pictographic writings, such as ancient Egyptian, Chinese and Japanese, and the more efficient alphabetic-based writings such as Greek, Russian and English, is that the first are eye-based … while the second, ear-based. (Inspired by a Nova program on PBS.)
Afterward: In another Nova program in this series, it was observed that printing the Muslim language was made more difficult because it’s only version was cursive.
STAND UP FOR ALPHABETS!
