My wife has a typical superstition — that whomever she votes for president won’t win. So she invariably votes for a throwaway candidate so that the person she prefers might win.
This is not a one-of. Many, possibly too many people invoke this reverse-English approach to uncertainty. They don’t change their socks before a key sports contest. They believe that if their baseball team scores in the first inning, they will ultimately win. They won’t watch the fourth quarter of a football game to insure victory.
Today, I have heard two reasons for the surging stock market: Biden is going to win ... and Trump is a shoo-in.
Can we call them self superstitions? I think so ... even the most logical of us have secret ones.
STAND UP FOR AMERICA!
