Ridicule vs. Debate

Ridicule is the currency of slopeheads. (This is ridicule.)  — Fletcher

When political discussions take place, they can be bifurcated into the categories of ridicule vs. debate. What is the difference?

Ridicule — when one or both sides are dismissive of the other side’s points … and use ad honinems to try to silence opposing arguments or facts. This dismissive approach is based on emotion with no attempt to understand or refute opposing facts or logic.

Debate— true debate occurs when the debaters can restate their opponents points correctly … and then point out counter facts and logic to refute these premises. It is the only form of political discussion that moves understanding forward.

(The above is debate.)
