ChatGPT

Here are a few questions I posed … through my son … to ChatGPT.  Although I am not thrilled with the answers, they are better than I expected.

Q: Compose a few paragraphs on global warming in the style of Dr. Seuss?

A: Oh, global warming is a thing we cannot deny,

It's getting hotter and hotter, oh my, oh my! The ice is melting, the seas are rising high, It's time to act now, before it's too late to try!

Our Earth is in trouble, we must take a stand, We need to reduce emissions, all across the land! We can drive less, bike more, or walk by foot, Use renewable energy, that's the route!

Oh, the polar bears and penguins, they need our help, They're losing their homes, with a yelp and a yelp! The forests are burning, the oceans are warm, It's time to act, to stop this terrible harm!

We can plant more trees, to help absorb the heat, Reduce waste and pollution, oh isn't that neat? We can make a difference, each and every one, To protect our planet, for generations to come!

So let's work together, to make a change, To save our Earth, it's not too strange! It's time to act now, we cannot delay, For a cleaner, greener world, let's pave the way!

Q: What probabilities or probability ranges do you assign to possibly, probably, likely, surely and certainly?

A: The interpretation of terms like "possibly," "probably," "likely," "surely," and "certainly" can be subjective and context-dependent, and therefore there is no universally accepted set of probabilities or probability ranges that are associated with these terms.

However, here is a general guide that may help:

  • "Possibly" suggests that an event is uncertain and could happen, but there is also a chance that it may not happen. A range of probabilities associated with "possibly" might be 0-50%.

  • "Probably" suggests that an event is more likely to happen than not, but there is still some uncertainty. A range of probabilities associated with "probably" might be 50-75%.

  • "Likely" suggests that an event is probable or expected to happen, with a higher level of confidence than "probably." A range of probabilities associated with "likely" might be 75-90%.

  • "Surely" suggests a high level of confidence that an event will happen, but there may still be a small chance that it will not. A range of probabilities associated with "surely" might be 90-95%.

  • "Certainly" suggests a very high level of confidence that an event will happen, with almost no chance of it not happening. A range of probabilities associated with "certainly" might be 95-100%.

Again, it's important to note that these ranges are not definitive and can vary depending on the context and the individual making the statement.

Q: What would be the current value of all the dissolved gold in the Gulf Stream seawater that passed a given point off the Atlantic coast in a 24 hour period?

A: It is not possible to determine the current value of all the dissolved gold in the Gulf Stream seawater that passed a given point off the Atlantic coast in a 24 hour period without more information. The amount of dissolved gold in seawater varies widely depending on location, depth, and other factors. In addition, the concentration of gold in seawater is very low, typically around 0.1-2 parts per billion, which makes it difficult and expensive to extract. Therefore, there is no simple answer to this question, and any estimate would require a detailed analysis of the specific location and conditions in question.

Q: Assume you have a closed circuit with a wire 186 thousand miles long with a battery and switch at one end and a light bulb at the other end. How long would it take for the light to light up after you threw the switch?

A; Assuming the wire is made of a perfect conductor with no resistance, the electric signal would travel at the speed of light, which is approximately 186,282 miles per second. Therefore, the light bulb would light up almost instantaneously, or within a fraction of a second after the switch is thrown.

However, in reality, there would be some resistance in the wire, which would slow down the signal. The amount of resistance would depend on the type of wire used and its thickness, among other factors. Therefore, the actual time it would take for the light to light up would depend on these factors and could range from a few milliseconds to several seconds.

Q: At lunch the boy dipped a cookie in his milk. To what do this and that refer?

A: "This" refers to the action of dipping a cookie in milk, and "that" refers to the cookie that was dipped in the milk.
