Wellesley College |
The total cost for attending Wellesley College next year will be $92,000 …. tuition, room & board, books, fees … not counting any student aid. This represents a trend and means that the wealthy can afford this expense … the very poor will be subsidized … and those in between will be screwed.
Once, 25% of collrge students came from the middle class. It is now down to 18% … a dangerous trend.
STAND UP FOT THE MIDDLE CLASS!

There are state colleges and community colleges that are much more affordable. Leave the top 200 colleges to the crazy rich.
Even with that … the serious issue is the reduction in the middle class in colleges of any stripe.
So, you are saying even if community/commuter colleges were free there would be less enrollment? Or is it that they discovered that you could earn a ton of money as a plumber or a welder?
I’m saying that … even with cheaper community colleges .. the middle class is still losing out education-wise. And I’ll now add that many poorer students are being encouraged with generous scholarships, to go to elite colleges where their flunk-out rates are very high because of their poor preparation … when they should be learning a trade.
Sounds like their guidance counselors were not able to guide very well.
And now they have multiplied 10-fold since I was in high school.
Most students do not pay sticker price. For Wellesley College the family would have to be over $300K to pay full freight. Thus about 1/3 of the (wealthier ) students (often foreign) pay list price. Most students will end-up paying about $30K. Some even less.
Still i agree with your point that the middle class cannot afford the more elite colleges
My guidance counselors were kind of like they are today. Sister Vincentius was driven to see how many different college banners she could mount on the wall rather than whether any of her students were going to get the best match for their skills and maturity.
When I went to college the admissions office was 4 people … now for only about 50% increase in enrollment, the admissions office is 35. Administration bloat all around.
Saying "the middle class cannot afford the more elite colleges and universities" is by definition true. Get your parental units to become upper class and the issue goes away. As we have seen, society's elites actually bribe elite schools to get their dumbass kids in, and then pay list price.
