We are used to viewing the world as a Mercator projection (the light blue part above). A Mercator projection is used to flatten the globe onto a surface … causing major size distortions in the polar regions. In the dark blue image the true sizes of these land masses are revealed. Most of the distortion is in the northern hemisphere … being the furthest away from the equator.
