Symbol of Democracy

"That rifle on the wall of the labor's cottage or the working-class flat is the symbol of democracy. It's our job to see that it stays there." -- George Orwell

It is "labourer's". Standing alone, the quote has ambiguity: It should never be touched, or it should be ever ready to serve its owner.

The first is the way Den describes Swiss folks that have a gun in every house yet rarely call them to use... or abuse.

The second is the neurotic NRA fanboy that grabs their gun whenever someone grunts in their direction.

The rifle he was talking about was a hunting rifle with a bolt action, not a killing machine. BTW, Orwell was a lefty - outspoken supporter of Democratic Socialism. Also anti-capitalist, anti -totalitarian. Surprised you would quote him.

Did Orwell come back from the grave to explain things to you? I knew about Orwells politics ... it was his anti-totalitarian part I liked.

I looked him up on Wiki.
